Jinxx
I approached a motel just as the sun began peeking over the clouds, lighting the sky pink and orange. I looked up through heavy eyes and couldn't help but smile. Dawn reminded me of Nathan; of all the times we stayed up together to watch them, bringing our bedclothes out of the window onto the roof, never talking - the silence said it all. The trail my warm tears traced down my cheeks drew me back to reality, and I entered the motel reception.
"Oh sweetheart are you okay? You look awful!" A kind-faced lady with a southern accent sat behind the desk, filing her nails. I turned behind me and caught my reflection in the glass door. It was true, I looked like death walking; dark circles under my eyes and ragged, muddy clothes. "I'm okay, thank you," I managed a weak smile and she frowned. "You most definitely are not! Here, come out back and I'll help you." She beckoned towards a door behind her and I held my hands up, shaking my head. "Please, don't trouble yourself! I'm fine, I would just like the cheapest room you have, for one day please." I slid $25 across the desk and tried to smile brightly although it probably came across as a grimace. After a short pause she came to a decision. "Okay, but I'm giving you our best available room, no extra cost." She beamed at me and reached for my hand, clasping it between each of hers. "If you need anything, anything at all, come down here and ask for me, okay?" Her kindness shook me slightly and I gave her a genuine smile. "Thank you so much, you've been so kind to me. Who do I ask for?" The woman gasped and shook her head with a smile. "Jesus, all this and I forgot to introduce myself! I'm Cherry. What's your name, honey?" I opened my mouth to tell her, but stopped. This is my chance to escape my association with them, to sever the ties with my family. But it's also severing ties with Nathan. I looked back up at Cherry and smiled. "What's the matter hun? Witch jinxed your tongue?" She chuckled at her own joke and smiled at me. "You look shocked! Is something wrong?" I shook my head. "No, nothing! I was just surprised that you said jinx, that's what my friends call me. Jinx.." Cherry opened her book of guests and began to write down my name. "Full name, sweetie?" "Jinxx Ferguson. Jinxx has two x's." I decided, and grinned. A new name, but still keeping my surname. The perfect way to leave my past behind but still hold onto the person I loved most. Love, I mentally corrected myself. I still love him, even though he's gone.
