Jake
I was staring through the window, my head turned away from the rest of the ward when my mom sat down on the edge of my bed. "Jake?" She said timidly, taking my hand in hers. I turned to face her, trying and failing to smile. "The nurses have said you aren't eating, honey. I've seen you push your food around your plate, looking at it like its dirt, looking at me like I'm a monster - !" Her eyes brimmed and overflowed, her voice going high before breaking, shattering my heart with it. "Mom, mom. Mom!" I burst out and wrapped my arms around her thin, shaking frame as tightly as I could manage and let my tears drip onto her shoulder. After a moment she straightened up, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand and looking at me with new determination. "Jakey, please, I know it's hard. I know it seems pointless, but I want you to know that we love you. Your sister and I are here for you. You're not alone, Jake. It's hard, but together we'll brave this storm. The road ahead is long, but we'll take it by day. So for now, let's face today." She embraced me tightly, resting her head on my neck and we sat for a while, comforting each other. Slowly, I grew sleepy and she lay me back on my pillows. I closed my eyes as she pulled the blankets over me and kissed my cheek, sitting beside my bed. As the sleep anaesthetic kicked in I yawned, and Mom leaned down to kiss me once more before whispering in my ear, "You're not alone."
