The landing certainly wasn't ideal. Somehow, you managed to fall on your back, River on top of you. "Oops!" You heard her voice in your ear. You managed to shove her off of you and stand up without too much difficulty.
"So we need to find three golden apples." You said, looking around the labyrinth. You had no idea why Harley would want all the campers to run around like mice down here. It was cold, dark, and it really didn't smell great. You were especially surprised that Chiron allowed this, since the labyrinth was a dangerous place.
Still, you and River trudged on. You managed to find two apples, narrowly dodging some of the traps. You learned that River was a very clumsy person. You got the fun job of catching her everytime she tripped over her own feet.
Eventually, the two of you reached a tunnel that smelled awful. You had the urge to turn around, but when you did a brick wall was there to greet you instead of the corridor you had just come down.
"Great..."
You looked over to River. To your surprise, she seemed rather calm. She held one hand over nose and her face was all scrunched up. You looked ahead. The path ahead of you was almost pitch black. There was a faint speck of light further into the distance that somehow illuminated just enough light for you to be able to see.
"I see light!" You heard a familiar voice shout. It wasn't River's, though, and it sounded much farther away. You couldn't quite place the voice, but it was definitely someone you knew.
"Did you hear that?" You turned to River and she gave you a nod. Without another word, the two of you began to run toward the light at the end of the corridor. Ahead, the tunnel ended, joining with a narrow, lengthwise cavern like a volcanic vent. It looked as if a colossal claw had slashed across the corridor and left a wound in the earth. You felt sick to your stomach.
As you turned to your right, you were surprised to see Meg and Apollo. The pair didn't seem to notice you or River though.
"We should turn around." Apollo said.
"That's stupid. Don't you see the golden glow? There's an apple in there."
You had to admit, Meg was right. That golden light was the same that the other apples had given off.
"The glow could be lava," he suggested. "Or radiation. Or eyes. Glowing eyes are never good."
"It's an apple." Meg said definitively. "I can smell apple."
"Oh, now you develop keen senses?" Apollo whined. You held back a snort.
You watched as Meg pushed forward, giving Apollo little choice but to follow. You nudged River, motioning her to follow behind them. If there was only one apple here, you two would just have to sabotage them for it. Unfortunately, at the end of the tunnel you were following, there was a narrow ledge. The pair took notice of you and River now, since you couldn't really sneak around them.
"Y/n?" Apollo whispered. "What are you doing here? It's dangerous!"
You shrugged. "Danger is my middle name. Besides, if you want that apple then you're going to have to fight for it."
"Is danger really her middle name...?" You could hear Meg whisper to herself.
"We're not going to fight for this apple." He put one hand on his hip, letting the other dangle dangerously close to Meg (well within her biting distance).
"Oh?" River took a step forward. "So you're going to walk away and let us take it?"
"No way!" Meg said, promptly punching Apollo in the gut. "Don't listen to him. We got here first, it's ours!"
You felt the familiar rush of competition take over you. As a child of Aries, you loved crushing your competition in these sorts of games. You weren't feeling it before, but now, with this face-to-face confrontation with another group, you couldn't hold yourself back. You slid your hands into your bag, pulling out the two apples you already got.
"Listen, Meg. River and I only need one more apple to win. Once we get this last one from you two, we'll be done!"
"Y/n--" Apollo's voice was trembling. "You shouldn't be so careless...."
You shoved the apples back into your bag. "Careless? I'm just trying to--"
The four of you were interrupted by a loud hiss coming from above you. It sounded as though the entire ocean had hit a frying pan and evaporated into a massive steam cloud. The ledge you stood on shook.
"Right above us--Delphi. The chamber of the Oracle." Apollo's voice was squeaky.
"That's impossible." Meg said, though she sounded unsure. You couldn't blame her.
"No, it's not." Apollo whispered. "And if this is Delphi, that means..."
As if right on cue, a monstrous body slid across the crevasse, completely covering the opening.
"Python." You could've sworn that his voice was an octave higher than Meg's. "He is here."
