You did not like having your leg tied to River's. As nice as she was, being tied to her was not ideal. It was awkward, and the two of you were having trouble walking correctly. That seemed like a horrible omen for how the race would go for the two of you.

You looked around you to see Will leaning against Nico. He wasn't looking at you, instead he was looking at Woodrow the satyr. Woodrow seemed to be trying to explain, though failing miserably. You heard Will sigh.

"I miss Grover. He used to organize things like this so well." He said.

"I'd settle for Coach Hedge." You watched as Nico shoved Will's arm off of his shoulder. "Besides, don't talk about Grover too loudly. Juniper's right over there."

You watched as Nico pointed to Juniper. You knew she was Grover's girlfriend. She was pretty and dressed in pale green.

"Okay, everybody!" Woodrow shouted. "Spread out a little bit more, please! We want you to have plenty of room so, you know, if you die, you won't take down all the other teams too!"

You and River watched as the other teams left to spread out. The satyrs made sure everyone was far eough apart and double checked your bindings. After they were done, Harley clapped for everyone's attention.

"Okay!" He said eagerly. "Here's the deal. Each team has to find three golden apples, then get back to this meadow alive."

You saw Laurel Victor raise her hand. "You mean the first team back wins?"

"Any team that gets back alive wins!" Harley said.

"That's ridiculous!" Holly said. "There can only be one winner. First team back wins!"

Harley shrugged. "Have it your way. My only rules are stay alive, and don't kill each other."

"O que?" Paolo complained.

"Now, now!" Chiron called. His saddlebags were filled to the brim with first-aid kits and emergency flares. "We won't need any help making this a dangerous challenge.Let's ahve a good clean three-legged death race. And another thing, campers, given the problems our test group had this morning, please repeat after me: Do not end up in Peru."

"Do not end up in Peru," Everyone repeated.

Sherman cracked his knuckles. "So where's the starting line?"

"There is no starting line," Harley said with glee. "You're all starting from right where you are."

You looked at River with concern and confusion, only to get the same look from her. As if right on time, the entire meadow began to shake. Dark lines etched across the grass, until it made a pattern. You barely had time to notice that it looked like a checkerboard before you heard Harley squeal, "Have fun!"

The ground beneath your feet opened, and you and your fellow campers fell into the Labyrinth.
