Chapter 3
Riley sat at her desk in her class, just looking around observing everyone. She noticed a few people looking at her and chuckling, she let out an annoyed breath and let her face fall. She had barely been here for two days and she had a reputation as the 'weird, mute girl'. She wasn't even mute. She chose not to talk alot in public unless it was to Nick and possibly Ethan since he never shut up anyway.
"So I hear Jay scared you off yesterday" Ethan said, taking his usual seat next to her, she rolled her eyes, she had finally made up her mind that this boy couldn't be ignored like how she ignored several of her classmates that went to talk to her.
"Yea, I just bounced into him though" she said, shrugging, talking in a small voice.
"Yeah I know. People see, people talk, you know? Anyway you don't have to be afraid of him. Everyone is afraid of him and his friends but I have a feeling you shouldn't be" he said in a thoughtful voice.
"Too late" Riley sang, causing Ethan to chuckle. Just then Jayden and his friends walked through the door of the class, and same as the last time, everyone fell silent. They walked past her and Ethan, the blonde one smirked at her and the quiet one just gave her a disapproving look. Jayden didn't even spare her a glance.
Unconsciously, she turned to look at Jayden, just for a second and found him scowling at his desk. He looked up and glared at her. She gasped and quickly spun around.
"Told ya" Ethan said, under his breath.
After school that day, Riley headed down to the botanical gardens for her first day on the job, she and Nick had to get jobs to support the orphanage since obviously Ms Twist wasn't doing a very good job at that.
"You ready?" she asked Nick, as they stared at the garden.
"Ready as I'll ever be" Nick said, with a sarcastic tone. She giggled and took hold of his hand as they entered the small office of the gardens. The secretary at the front desk was typing away and had not seen them. Riley cleared her throat. She still didn't look up.
"EXCUSE ME!" Riley yelled, getting the attention of everyone in the room. She shrunk back behind Nick and he chuckled.
"Nothing to see here people" he called out causing her to chuckle.
"Oh I'm sorry, are you the new workers?" she asked. Nick nodded, the secretary stood up and gestured for the two of them to follow her into the garden. Many beautiful flowers adorned the gardens, there was a huge pond in the middle which was covered in water lillies. Riley smiled at the simple yet beautiful scene. After the secretary had given them instructions about how to take care of the plants and the very few animals, the two of them got to work with watering the plants.
"So what exactly do you know about plants?" Riley asked Nick as soon as the secretary was out of earshot.
"Not a thing" he said, proudly. She laughed and squirted some water in his face before moving onto the next plant.
"So can I ask you something Riley?" Nick asked seriously, resting his water bottle onto a table.
"Shoot" she answered lazily.
"What's going on between you and Jayden?" he asked, scrutinizing her face carefully.
"Considering I've never talked to him before, I'd go out on a limb and say nothing" she said sarcastically.
