So reminder this is a short story which is why Riley might seem to be getting comfortable around the guys kinda fast. It’s been like two months since she met them so yea.

This chapter is probably kind of short

Btw nothing is going to happen between Riley and Nick since they are basically brother and sister, not by blood but yeah….

“Ms Moore can you stay back for a few minutes?” the Spanish teacher asked the next day. Riley nodded timidly and Ghost turned around to smirk at her.

“You’re in trouble” he mouthed. She narrowed her eyes at him, causing him to chuckle. She sighed and watched as all the students filed out of the classroom leaving her alone with Senorita Rodriguez.

“So Miss Moore, I noticed your Spanish is very good so I need you to do me a favour” Senorita Rodriguez said. Riley nodded and she continued. “We have a new student coming in tomorrow but the principal said his Spanish grades were pretty bad so I was wondering if you could tutor him?”

Riley’s breath hitched as she heard this. She had barely gotten used to Jayden, Ghost and Remy and she was only a little bit used to Emily and Ethan yet the teacher wanted to add someone else. She hadn’t even wanted to be friends with them in the first place it just happened. What if this person was different? What if they were as bad as Ms Twist? What if he didn’t like her or she didn’t like him?

“Of course I would tutor him” Riley answered in a soft voice.

“Okay so his name is Donovan Andrews” the teacher said and Riley’s heart rate sped up and beads of sweat dotted her forehead.

Donovan Andrews

The name that she and Nick had promised never to call again. The name they considered a swear word. The person that crept into her nightmares every night. The person she saw every time she closed her eyes. Could it be him? There were probably a million other Donovan Andrews in New York. Right?

She exited the classroom and thought about this as she walked to her locker. She had gotten rid of Donovan when the orphanage moved here. Was he following her? Or was it purely a coincidence? In her thoughts she wasn’t watching where she was going and accidentally bumped into someone.

“Sorry!” she said, feeling panicked, but when she looked up she saw it was Jayden. He waved a dismissive hand so she was guessing he was saying that he didn’t mind that she bumped into him.

“It’s fine. You okay?” he asked, looking worried. She nodded, not wanting him to know about Donovan yet. She felt guilty seeing as she knew everything about him yet he knew so little about her.

“Yeah I’m fine but I have to go. Bye” she said, quickly shoving past him and exiting the school. She quickly went to find Nick and they left school. She was grateful when Nick didn’t ask her why she wanted to leave so early.

“What’s wrong?” Nick asked Riley as soon as they got back to the orphanage. They were sitting on the old swings. Riley didn’t mind the cold air. As a matter of act she kind of liked it.

“Donovan might be coming back” she said, her voice sounding shaky. Nick immediately stopped swinging and turned to look at her.

“How do you know?” he asked.

“Senorita Rodriguez asked me to tutor the new student in Spanish because his grades from his last school were bad and Spanish was his worst subject” she explained, trying to force back the tears. “I’m going inside” she announced and she got up from the swing and headed upstairs to her room and threw herself on the bed and stared at the ceiling. She remembered everything about Donovan, but she barely had any good memories.

“SURPRISE!” Donovan shouted, holding a giant Teddy bear in his hands. Riley laughed and went to give him a hug and took the teddy bear. He was in a good mood that day and she knew she would have to cherish it since it was rare that he treated her so nicely.

“You didn’t have to do this” she said, grinning at the room. There was a table set up for two and a wide choice of meals set out. It was her sixteenth birthday and this was just what she needed to cheer her up after hearing the news Ms Twist had told her earlier that day.

“Yes I did. Have a seat” he said pulling a chair out for her. She grinned at him and sat down and he took the seat across from her. They ate in a comfortable silence until Riley foolishly broke it.

“We have to leave. Ms Twist said child services are coming to do their check up and the orphanage isn’t up to mark so we’re going to Washington or something” she said in a rush. Donovan’s blue eyes darkened and he slammed his hand down on the table making Riley jump.

“You are not leaving me!” he yelled making her flinch back.

“I don’t have a choice Donovan” she reminded him in a soft voice.

“Stay here with me then” he pleaded.

“You know I can’t do that” she said in a regretful tone. Truth was, she was actually happy to be leaving. Donovan’s mood swings and aggressive behaviour were making whatever feelings she had for him fade. She gasped when Donovan slapped her across the face.

“You are staying!” he said in a demanding tone. She flinched back as silent tears fell from her face. Donovan’s gaze softened and he caressed her bruised cheek.  “I’m sorry” he said in a soft voice. She felt scared so she simply nodded and kissed him on the cheek so he would think he was forgiven.

She knew leaving was the right thing to do this time.

Riley felt tears streaming down her face. Donovan Andrews was the worst thing that had happened to her and she never wanted to see him again. She thought she escaped him but apparently not.

She got up from the bed and grabbed her jacket that was hanging on the chair and headed out of the orphanage, knowing exactly who she needed to talk to, the person that could make her feel better.

“That’s probably the most I have ever heard you talk honey” Regina said, looking shocked and proud at the same time. She had decided to come to the library and ask Regina for advice. She had told her everything from the Child services to Donovan to Jayden, Ghost and Remy. “Sounds like you have a little crush on the Jayden boy. Am I right?” she asked with a wink.

Riley’s eyes widened in horror and she shook her head in horror. She felt her face was probably the colour of a tomato by now. She had never thought about her strange attachment to Jayden like that. “We’re just friends” she said in a shy voice.

“Yeah sure. Sounds to me like you got yourself in a skinny love situation” Regina said, putting some more books up on a shelf.

“No it’s not I swear” Riley said, feeling her breathing picking up.

“Then why are you blushing. Honey, you look like an over ripe tomato” Regina said with a laugh and Riley felt herself becoming redder and redder by the minute. “If it helps it sounds like he feels the same way.”

“I doubt” Riley muttered.

“Why wouldn’t he? You’re gorgeous!”

“Thanks but I don’t think I’m his type” Riley said. “And he’s definitely not my type.”

“Children these days are so shy. In my day if I liked a boy. The moment I realize I like him, I will tell him” Regina said, shaking her head in disappointment. She had a point there.

But was she right?

Was it possible Riley was falling for Jayden?

So this book has like…14 chapters left cuz I want it to be between 20 or 25 chapters. So it’s pretty much half way through I guess.
