I stared out the window, watching the trees fly past us.

Riley was lying across Zack and I's laps.

We're halfway to Canada by now.

"Sorry again about your face." Zack apologized for the twentieth time in the last hour.

The low rumble of the jeep's engine was the only sound.

"Won't it be weird?" Dakota mumbled loud enough to make it clear he was talking to me. "Going back to real, normal life. Waking up under sheets. On a mattress. In a house with paintings on the walls. Take a shower. Put on clean clothes. Eat fresh food. Go to a job. Come back home. Watch tv. Eat dinner. Go to sleep under sheets. On a mattress. In a house with paintings on the walls. And start over again. It seems impossible to even imagine."

"Yeah." I agreed.

I peered around the passenger seat in curiosity as to where we were.

The cracked and worn road stretched for miles. The painted lines were almost completely faded.

Now that we were out of the city remains, all that surrounds us are trees.

About a dozen meters ahead of us, a person jumps out of the brush and starts waving at us frantically.

As we got closer, I recognized him.

"Stop the car!" I shout.

"We don't have room!"

"Stop the fucking car!"

Our car screeched to a halt.

I jumped out and ran back to the person we passed.

"Please! Help!" He yelled. His eyes widened. "Jay? Jay! Please help us you have to help us!"

"Ryan! What's wrong? Is someone hurt?"

"It's Parker, he's hit! Mike is trying to keep pressure on the wound but it isn't working! Mitch is dead! Everything's gone to shit!"

"Calm down, Ryan."

"Listen, I'm sorry we threw you out. I was trying to protect my friends, and then half of our supplies disappeared with Dakota and we had to venture out and-"

"It's fine. Help me carry Parker." I marched over to the brush and found Mike crying over Parker, who was containing screams.

"There's a large group not far behind us. We need to move now!" Ryan warned me as we all ran back to the car. Ryan was carrying Parker and I was supporting Mike because he was on the verge of collapsing from exhaustion.

"There's space in the cargo compartment." I comforted Mike. "Ryan and you will be okay. Parker will be okay."

Mark and I helped Ryan and Mike into the cargo compartment. I took some medical supplies too.

I put Parker across Dakota, Zack and I's laps. Mark and Garry held Riley and Dashiell so that Dakota and Zack could help.

We continued driving.

I took off Parker's shirt, as that seemed to be source of the blood.

I put water on a cloth and handed it to Dakota.

"Keep that on his forehead and keep him awake and distracted." I instructed. "Zack, switch seats with me and keep him upright."

We switched so I was sitting between them.

The wound was located low on his left shoulder. I dabbed a bit of alcohol on it and Parker winced and hissed in pain, Dakota calming him down.

I washed my hands with the alcohol and gently poked around the wound until I found the bullet. I carefully took it out and after cleaning and dressing the wound I told him it's okay to rest.

"We just have to make sure he's breathing." I explained.

Mark gave Dakota Dashiell and I let Zack hold Riley.

200 miles left.
