'Bleep. Bleep. Bleep. Bleep.'

I groaned and opened my eyes.

My first instinct made me observe my surroundings for an escape.

White walls, lighting fixtures. Electricity?

I'm on a bed of some sort, but it's comfortable. A rich base?

I looked to my right. A window. Idiots, that's an easy escape route.

I looked beyond the window.

Cars? Buildings? People walking around on the streets?

What the hell?

'Bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep.'

I look to my left. What is that? That jumping line reminds me of something.

'Heart monitor' comes to mind. Words I hadn't thought of in a long time.

I looked down at myself. I was wearing a cloth.

'Hospital gown'

I'm in a hospital?

There was a strange blanket over me.

'Quilt'

There's a small tv hung in the corner of the room with a women wearing a pan suit on it.

'News'

I looked at my hand, one finger was in a splint.

In my other hand, was a red button.

'Nurse button'

I pressed it.

About 15 seconds later, two nurses and a doctor rushed in.

The doctor poked at my back and chest with a circle thing.

'Stethoscope'

The nurses started talking to me.

"Jay Doe, do you remember your name?"

"Jaylyn Bayani. No middle name." I answered. "How did you know my nickname?"

"One of your friends that brought you here called after you when we had to take you away from him."

"As you are aware, you have been rescued from America. I am going to tell you what's happened. You had a concussion and smoke in your lungs. You had a broken leg and three broken ribs. We found bullet wounds on your shoulder, hip, and foot. You were unconscious upon arrival. You arrived with 16 other survivors."

"Who?"

"We don't know any of their last names but we managed to have a couple healthy survivors identify them."

The other nurse took out another list.

"Devon, Zach, Will, Bee, Mitchell, Stacy, Maddie, Dan, Addison, Delilah, Finn, Ash, Tucker, Dylan, and Rose were the survivors in the same rescue cars as you."

That can't be right.

"What about Christopher? Or Jess? Or Emma? Or Lizzy?"

The nurse looked at me sadly.

"I'm afraid those are the exact names reported dead."

Shit. I didn't even know the kids that well. But they had an entire fucking life in front of them. Shit.

"What's gonna happen is, after we get the last names of everyone, we are going to call all direct relatives we can find here in Canada using old American records. You'll be given a certain amount of money from a charity depending on your mental and physical condition and living situation. You, in particular are almost completely healed. You'll have to stay until your leg is healthy enough to walk."

"Is anyone else from my surviving group awake?"

"Yes. Actually, it's almost lunch. People can visit while you're eating if you want."

"I would like that."

"Okay, I'll tell the desk that."

=+=

They brought my lunch in.

A peanut butter and jelly sandwich with chips and Gatorade.

It was the best meal I ever had.

I ate it so fast that by the time my first visitor came in, I was finished.

"Someone's hungry." Bee said, smiling. "I don't blame you."

Bee had new clothes and she started to let her hair grow out.

"Mitchell and I are heading back to Melbourne in a couple days." She announced.

I hugged her.

"I'm gonna miss you." I murmured.

"Don't worry, I got a new cell phone. Here's my number." Bee wrote it down on the tv directory.

"Should I come back later or?" Devon asked, leaning on the doorframe.

"No! Come in!" I said, waving him over.

Devon hugged me and we all talked for a while.

"What happened to Jess and Emma?" I asked.

"A couple kids died to lack of oxygen. We didn't know the bombs would start that large of a fire."

"We should put together a memorial for everyone we knew who died in America." Be suggested.

"That's a brilliant idea."

"Am I invited to the party?" Will appeared at the door.

"Yeah, we're getting down in the hospital. Rave time!" Devon joked.

Will hugged Bee, Devon, and I.

"How did you guys escape that huge group, anyways?" I asked.

"We hid under the floorboards, Stacy had built a bunker for situations such as that one." Devon answered.

"How is Stacy?"

"She's doing well, considering."

"Is there even room in there?" Dan asked.

Bee waved him over.

We continued chatting, mostly planning the details for the memorial.

I'm finally safe.
