Chapter 9

A creaking noise woke me up.

It's dark, the only light being from the moon.

I shrugged it off and tried to fall asleep again.

More creaking.

I dragged myself from my cot and carefully opened the door.

The bad end of a gun swung my way.

My hands flew in the air.

"Please don't shoot!" I whispered.

The gun moved away and hands placed themselves on my shoulders.

"Are you with a group?" A male voice asked, concerned.

"Why?"

"We're from Canada, we can get willing survivors across the border."

"Oh my gosh." I froze. "Oh my gosh, really?"

"Yes, now are you with a group or not?"

"Oh, yes! Yes I am!"

I ran into Devon's room.

"Devon! Devon! Canadians are gonna save us!"

"What the hell?" Devon tried to get out of bed but got tangled in his blankets and ended up face planting on the ground.

"This group from Canada, the kind I told you guys about, are gonna take us across the border!"

"Oh my lanta! Wake everyone up!"

I went through everyone's rooms, waking everyone and telling them to meet in the living room.

I got to Will's last, his room being at the end of the hall.

I grabbed his hand and dragged him into the living room.

Everyone sat around and three representatives from the Canadian group stood.

"My name is Mark, this is Zack and Garry." The first one introduced. (A/N-The wiki says Garry is Huahwi's real name idk)

We all introduced ourselves and they started explaining.

"We have a covered route right back to the wall. If all of you are willing, we can take you there. No weapons allowed, just as a precaution. You can bring all belongings, though." Mark glanced at Riley, who was sitting in my lap. "Pets are welcome too."

Riley is much bigger now, not too big though.

"How do we know you aren't lying?" Dakota questioned, holding an almost 5 year old Dashiell.

"You don't have to go, we're not forcing you." Zack explained. "If we were going to kill you, we probably would've done it already."

"One of them didn't shoot me when they had the perfect opportunity." I pointed out.

"It would be ideal to leave now, while groups are least active. But we can leave I the morning too." Garry chimed in.

"We should leave now. The sooner the better." Devon suggested.

"Yeah, let's all pack and meet back here." Stacy agreed.

=+=

I packed all the few clothes I owned, my necklace, and my journal.

We put all our weapons in a pile in the living room and they loaded up a cargo car with our bags.

We all stood outside, waiting for the second cargo car to arrive.

After almost an hour, Mark broke the silence.

"Where the hell is he?"

Silence returned as soft skidding was heard in the distance.

Zack backed up, still looking out onto the road.

"What is it? What's wrong?" I asked.

"Get the guns." He answered.

"What?"

"I said get the guns!" He shouted.

Everyone ran inside and we passed guns around.

As we got back outside, a car identical to the one that took away our bags came barreling down the street.

And a fairly large group of people with guns followed, firing at the car and us.

The car rolled behind the house and we all fired back.

They outnumbered us by at least a dozen people.

"We need to leave!" I yelled over the gunfire.

"There's not enough room for everyone!" Zack yelled back. "There were supposed to be more cars!"

"Devon, Mark, Zack, and Garry, in the house. Now!" I yelled. "Zach, Stacy, Bee, Mitchell, Will, and Maddie, hold the line!"

I retreated to the house and was followed by Devon and the Canadian group. Dakota was sitting in a corner, covering Dashiell's ears and comforting Riley.

Mark marched to the back door and checked on the driver, who made it with just a few scratches. The car had bullet holes in the windows.

I grabbed Dakota's shoulders and escorted him out to the car.

"Dakota and Dashiell first." Riley trotted over innocently. "And Riley."

Devon raised an eyebrow.

"He's just a puppy. He doesn't deserve these conditions."

"Fine. By the way, I'm pretty sure those are the guys who were at the apartment building when..." Devon sighed.

"What?!" Rage surged through me. "We have to kick their asses!"

Devon had a bandana and some kind of war paint on.

"I don't know. I recognize the leader. They're powerful like the other group."

"We have space for one more person." Zack reminded us.

"I say Maddie next, she's pretty vulnerable." I suggested.

"I'm sorry." Devon sighed with pity in his eyes. "But this is what Jordan would want."

"Wha-!" Devon's fist swung towards my face and everything went black.
