They sent us to work in the alleyways.

Guards surrounded every block.

I didn't recognize where we were anyways.

I looked for the guard I gave the letter to but he was no where in sight.

"Piper!" Ginger hissed. "Over here!"

I weaved through people until I stood behind Ginger.

She pointed inside a building, just to the left.

We weren't allowed in the buildings so I was careful about peaking in.

A small, shivering, puppy was curled up, trying to sleep. It's coated looked to have once been white, now stained with dirt and matted from rain.

"Aw, poor thing."

"We can keep it." Ginger suggested.

"Are you insane?! This world isn't fit for kids, let alone a puppy!"

"If they find it, they'll shoot it. If we leave it here, it's either going to freeze to death or get shot."

I looked at the ball or fur again.

"Fine. I'll give up some of my rations for it."

Ginger reached in and picked it up.

"Is it a boy or a girl?"

"Why would I wanna check? Let's just call it a boy."

"How about-"

"Riley. I'm gonna name him Riley."

=+=

Ginger and I warmed Riley up and gave him some food.

We kept him hidden from the guards and cared for him.

It had to have been at least a week and a half since I was taken from the base.

Everything was silent.

Everyone was asleep.

I laid awake, staring at the ceiling.

With a sudden clanging, the bars of our cell slid open.

"All of you, out quick!" Someone whispered from outside the cell.

The voice was unfamiliar.

Now he was shouting to wake people up.

"We have to go now! Quickly!"

People sleepily sat up, not believing him.

I tapped Ginger's shoulder.

Her eyes opened and she shot up.

"Everyone! The bars are down! No guards! Let's go!" Ginger yelled.

That got people moving.

Everyone rushed out of the cell.

I held Riley to my chest.

Ginger showed me where to run.

Gunshots rang out.

I couldn't tell if the Team was firing at us, or if someone else was firing at the Team. We just kept running.

There was screaming and yelling and more gunshots.

Ginger and I ran out onto the streets and the four centimeters of freshly fallen snow slightly crunched under our feet.

We got far enough away and started just walking.

I gave Riley to Ginger and attempted to warm my hands up by breathing on them.

Hey dere! Sadie here!
