My eyes refused to open, my body trying to convince me to relish in the warmth and the calming scent of tea. The pillow I held onto absorbed my body heat, reflecting it back to me. I knew there was training today, but I didn't want to go. The lure of the bed sang to me like the sirens did to Annabeth.
And then my pillow started moving.
"Percy?" Kaldur asked, his voice far too clear for him to have just woken up. "Are you awake?"
"-ack to sleep." I felt around with my hand, whacking him in the face before covering his eyes. "It's too early." Kaldur snorted. "Sleep."
Try as I might, Kaldur sat up, taking the faint scent of his cologne with him. He stretched, shirt riding up, only for it to be completely removed as he pulled it over his head. The black lines of his tattoos curled up over his shoulders, sweeping down to the middle of his back.
He turned his head enough to see me. "You are talking to Canary today." He held his hand in the air before I could object. "Talk to her. I know it is not my place to interfere, but I have a responsibility as the leader of this team and as your friend." The slope of his shoulders deepened as he sighed. "I worry about you. Not only have you lost your friends, but what little of a family you had was murdered, and you continue to act as though nothing is wrong. It is not healthy to internalize this."
"What have I done to make you think I have healthy coping mechanisms?"
"You say that though it is a bad thing."
"In my family, anything healthy means there's something horribly wrong. Do you know how much of a heart attack the universe would have if my uncle stopped cheating on his wife?" I turned in the blankets. If he couldn't get me out, then he couldn't make me go. I peeked out from my cocoon, watching as he pulled on a tank top.
He walked back to the bed, smoothing my hair. I closed my eyes and pressed my- "Hey!" I squirmed, only to be held firm by the the arm wrapped around my waist.
"You are going to therapy." The door opened without a sound and his bare feet were equally silent on the stone floor. "I will call Tyson. I am not above guilt tripping you." I leaned my head against him as he walked through the halls. He didn't have to tell me that. I had known it since the day he begged me for my last cookie.
"You can make me go, but you can't make me talk."
"Oh, I know I cannot, but quite honestly, Black Canary has a knack for staring directly into your soul until you start talking," Kaldur said. He lowered me to the ground. I stumbled. "Careful."
"You're the one who dragged me here." I straightened. My hand brushed his, offering a small distraction with the resulting flutter of my heart. "I- Do I really have to do this?" I swallowed past the lump in my throat, staring at the plain gray door before me.
"Technically, unless she makes it mandatory, no," Kaldur said. "But her idea of voluntary counseling can sometimes be working you to the point of exhaustion and dragging you into the room." His lips quirked upwards. "That happened to Connor once."
"Oh, great. Another Will." There was really no avoiding it. Inhaling, I stepped forward and opened the door. Canary sat in a green armchair, legs hanging over the arm as she wrote something on whatever paper she had on her clipboard. Her eyes flicked to me and she sat up.
"Hello, Percy," she said. "Your uncle already filled out all the paperwork, so we can get-" She blinked and stared. "Did you forget to change?"
"Kaldur dragged me here. Trust me therapy is not my choice of morning activities." I sank into the chair opposite of her, pulling my legs up with me. We stared at each other, daring each other to say something. I yawned. My hand pulled across my eyes trying to wipe my tiredness away.
"I know this wasn't exactly your choice, but I have some questions I want to ask you." Paper rustled as she flipped to a clean sheet. The session went much as my first session with Will, but with a lot more deflecting questions. Gods and monsters aren't valid reasons for trauma to someone who doesn't deal with them. Canary pressed her lips together, and, in turn, my canine bit into my cheek. I shrank under her scrutiny. My fingers fluttered, tap tap tapping against my thigh. I choked down whatever noise was trying to come out of my throat.
Static layered every sense, drowning out everything Canary tried to say. My limbs were heavy, unwilling to move even the slightest inch, and whatever I saw seemed to have been forgotten seconds after. My head fell back, hitting the back of the chair with a soft thud. The movement sent jolting pain through my head, ebbing and flowing like the lava we used to wash dishes at camp. The heaviness never went away, even as I curled in on myself. Teeth ground into my skin jarring me out of the fog for a brief moment. But even that pain faded away. A hand pressed into my shoulder.
The only response, a flinch.
