Jasmine sat alone on the same chair that she had to sit on every time she receives the needle with the substances. Her head was bowed down staring at her feet, she liked the color of her shoes and she could not help but examine them. They were the only things that she had kept from her home, and no matter how much they squeezed her feet in a painful matter she could not let them go.
The door opened quickly making her jump in her seat, and when she took a side ways glance at who was barging in, it was expectedly some soldiers dragging someone in. She has seen the sight before, and it could only mean one thing, someone was either shot and is dead or someone’s body has rejected the substances and has also died. To her surprise though, the person who was being dragged was very much alive. He was struggling against the firm grip of the soldiers, and he was bringing his weight down to the ground trying to get free of their clutches.
Among the soldiers who were holding the boy was Demetrius, and Jasmine had to inch to the left to get a better look at the prisoner. To her utter surprise it was the infamous Heath Paice, who was to share her testing room and she could not help but feel some excitement. It’s been awhile that she had someone to share something with.
Maybe we would become friends, Jasmine thought enthusiastically. All possible thoughts of her and the boy passing time laughing about and sharing jokes. Jasmine, in fact never had a friend other than her cousin, it was an exciting moment to see the boy that she always saw as a limp and dead body now alive and yelling curses at everyone.
“Jasmine,” Someone spoke, awakening her from her thoughts, “Jasmine, stop ignoring me.” The girl looked up to see that now Demetrius has left the group who were holding Heath firmly to a chair and now has managed to walk towards her.
“Oh hello,” Jasmine spoke grinning, “Is he going to stay in my testing room?”
Demetrius stared at her for a while until he shook his head, “Never mind that, I have noticed that you seem bigger since last week. You seem more…buff and fit. I swear last week you looked like a poor small girl who hasn’t eaten properly for over a year.”
“What are you saying?” She asked, her eyes narrowing. “I don’t seem to be following what you’re saying.”
“I’m saying,” Demetrius spoke, lowering his voice, “that you might have not that long until you finally shift.”
There was silence between them apart from the yelling and cursing from Heath. Then Jasmine said, “You’re joking, right? Say you are joking!”
Demetrius looked around to see if anyone was listening, but the soldiers that were with him, were surrounding Heath and they were talking and laughing among themselves, while Heath was handcuffed to the chairs and was still trying to break free.
“That’s why I want to help you run away,” Demetrius pressed keenly. He lowered his height by bending his knees so he would match Jasmine’s eye level. Then he pressed his hands on each side of the armchair by Jasmine’s sides.
However, the girl started to shake her head, “No, no, I could get killed!”
“No,” Demetrius continued, “You just need to keep your mouth shut and never tell anyone about what I’m about to tell you. I’m grouping with many prisoners and we’re planning an escape plan. Now, if you just follow what…”
“Stop that Dmitri,” Jasmine interrupted angrily, “You are…you are scaring me right now. I don’t want to run away, and you are leaning in too close!”
Blinking slowly, Demetrius leaned away and straightened up. “You don’t want to do this?” He asked, losing all hope of saving his friend.
“Well, definitely not!’ Jasmine chuckled nervously, “I don’t want to die! I would rather shift than lose my life!”
“You won’t die,” Demetrius said a little annoyed, “I will make sure that you will leave this place unharmed.”
“Then you are risking your life for me,” Jasmine said raising her eyebrows, there was no signs of being impressed on her face. Then she lowered her voice, “You may like to risk your life but I don’t want to.”
The soldier clenched his teeth angrily then he hissed, “It’s your choice, but when I make it out of here and you remain in this prison, you’ll be the sorry soldier. You won’t be able to live your life like a normal sixteen year old. Do you even know what chocolate is?”
“No what is it?” Jasmine said curiously.
“It’s your damn choice to stay or not.” Demetrius alleged. He gave her one last chance before walking back to where Heath sat, which he was now silent and had his head raised, staring up at the ceiling with a hopeless look.
To Jasmine, he looked like he was praying or was at least doing something that involved thinking of God. Heath looked like he was in a horrid state; his bottom lip was split that had a blood oozing out, it was as the though the healing bruises on his face weren’t enough of a reminder of the horrid night he suffered. For the first time ever she felt saddened at the hopeless sight of him because she knew that a few punches to the face are not enough for a punishment for trying to escape.
The soldiers’ chattering died out as the door at the side of the room opened, and in stepped Andy with a couple of other doctors walking right behind him. He stopped in his tracks when he spotted the amount of soldiers that were standing in the room, and then his face grew red from anger. “What are all of you doing here?” He said crossly.
“Doctor, Heath tried to escape,” A soldier spoke. “Surprisingly he made it pretty far before we stopped him.” He chuckled, “it’s funny also that he tried to break free of our clutches.”
“We were deciding on his punishment.” Another spoke, “Punishment is part of our decision, since we’re the guards.”
“We put him with Jasmine,” Demetrius blurted suddenly, “The last time we put someone with her, he died.”
The two men exchanged looks that cannot be read. However, Jasmine somewhat had a clue why would they be putting Heath with her. The first and biggest reason is for Heath’s punishment not be severe enough to be decided by the Heads, and the second reason is to keep Jasmine some company since she missed it.
“Alright, let him get some major beating from an almost shifted Little Devil,” Andy said to some laughter from the soldiers, “But first I need to give two needles to two dangerous people, so all of you get out of my sight!”
