Maya sat curled up on the sofa with the television on. Betty had made her a cup of strong tea and some biscuits. However, Maya had no heart to eat or drink. She has barely eaten anything the past five days. The accident that occurred several days ago has affected her greatly. She no longer wanted to see anyone or talk to anyone. Betty and Maya’s father have been hovering over her trying to get her to do something or even go to school, but unfortunately she didn’t have any energy to do anything.
“You can’t just stay like this forever,” Betty said from the kitchen all of the sudden. “Eat your biscuits and you can see Chester.”
“I don’t want to see him,” Maya said hollowly. “It’s my fault Heath is gone. He’s dead because of me.”
There was a moment of silence and Betty walked over to the sofa. She laid a hand on the girl’s shoulder and rubbed it gently, “You were in a very dangerous condition and you needed help. Heath took no time to save you, it was his choice, and you know he cared for you. Now, if you really want to pay him back you can go see his brother, Tyler. I know Heath’s family are struggling a lot, if you really care, go help them.”
Maya looked up and wiped her tears, “Do you have their address?”
“Yes,” Betty said smiling, “If you see them it will make you feel better.”
Tears glistened Maya’s eyes once again, “How is that going to make me feel better if I go see them. It will only remind me of Heath and my mistakes!”
“Don’t be so sensitive Maya,” Betty said her tone of voice going cold, “I have been helping Heath ever since he was being chased down, I know what it’s best, and I made him a promise that I will help Tyler and Lily out.”
“Lily?” Maya said confused, “Is that his little sister?” Betty nodded then Maya looked away, “You made the promise, not me! Are you trying to punish me by reminding myself that it was my fault Heath got caught?! You go help them, you’re not the guilty one, and you’ll feel good about helping them!” She stood up and stomped off to the large staircase and to her room.
Betty stood in her spot and then shook her head in pity. Then she returned to her work in the kitchen. She knew Maya will change her mind soon enough. And surely enough, after an hour Maya came back down all dressed in a warm outfit. Betty sat on the large dining table reading her favorite historic book.
“What is their address?” Maya spoke quietly. Betty placed a startled face and closed her book. “Betty, what is Heath’s address?”
“Oh,” Betty said taking a paper out and writing down the address with a blue pen. Then she handed it to Maya and said, “I am happy that you are fixing up some things.”
Maya glared at her, “Stop it.” Then she left the house without another word.
“You can take the car!” Betty called after her.
“I know!” Maya shouted back.
Betty paused for a second and made sure that she heard the car engines start. She didn’t want Maya to take a bus or cab. Some people might recognize her as the girl who was the reason of Heath’s capture.
Maya stopped a block away from Heath’s house; she didn’t want Tyler or Lily to see the expensive car she owned. She didn’t want them to have negative first impressions. It was the afternoon, so Tyler should be home. She took a minute or two to walk over to the tiny little house. It was in a better condition than most of the other houses in the poor area. However, it still broke Maya’s heart to see the horrible condition they were living in. It was cold and snow covered the whole house.
On the porch step stood a boy who looked so similar to Heath. He was only shorter, but other than that he might have been Heath’s twin, there were only minor differences. Maya picked up her pace, and then stopped behind a tree right on the side of the lawn next to Heath’ house. She watched silently the boy as he shoveled the porch steps. He worked silently and he didn’t pause at all. To Maya, he looked like a hard working boy, and she wondered how he was able to take that much pressure. She was about to take a step forwards from behind the tree when suddenly a girl around Tyler’s age appeared running towards him from across Maya. However, the girl didn’t notice Maya at all. The girl had her furry hood over her, covering her face.
