As soon the sun has set Heath jumped out of the hole and walked with great alert back to the park. His sister should be there and he didn’t want her to wait alone in the streets. He was worried that she might get hurt by some drunk men, or worse be kidnapped. With rapidness he hurried over to the park, and to his relief he saw the little figure of his sister sitting at the lonely park bench where he had sat waiting for her until she was let out for recess.

“Lily,” He said warmly and the little girl rushed into his open arms. They remained in that position for awhile, clinging to each other tightly, too afraid to let go. Then he broke away and stared down at her cute little face.

She returned the smile and she held out a white plastic bag, “This is for you. Tyler and I decided to split our dinner and give you half.” He took it slowly from her small hands. “Heath, are you going to come home tomorrow?”

“I will try,” Heath murmured slightly and his eyes left the plastic bag and back to her. “Lily, I can’t come home for awhile. If no one was running after me, I would never leave.”

“I know,” Lily smiled and she placed her hands in her pink coat’s pockets. “But, you won’t be gone forever, right?”

“Of course not,” Heath smiled and went to his knees so he could match her height. “Even if the world is ending I will run all the way just to be with you guys. I love no one more than you and Tyler.” His voice cracked slightly and faded too.

His sister’s happy eyes turned into grief-stricken ones. “Why are you covered in mud, Heath?” He didn’t answer. “There’s a big cut on your forehead too. You have to come home, to wash up.” Her hand raised and she placed it gently on his cheek, “I love you to the moon and back, Heath” He closed his eyes at her warm touch, and he inhaled her scent of home. Now the other hand caressed his golden hair.

“I love you even more than that.” He said softly.

“Even farther than the moon?” Lily asked with a tone of surprise.

“So far that no man has ever managed to reach it,” Heath said smiling and opened his eyes to stare into hers. Then her arms went around his neck and she hugged him tightly. “Promise me that’ll take care of mom and Tyler for me.”

“I promise,” Lily said delicately. Heath knew she meant from all her heart. “Promise me that’ll you’ll come back, even if it’ll be for only minutes.”

Heath sighed and he wrapped his arms around her body, “I promise.” The two closed their eyes and hugged each other even tighter, then they broke away and Heath stood up, “Now hurry back home, little monkey.”

“I love you Heath,” Lily said sadly and she ran off. She didn’t even look back once and Heath knew why, she was too little to understand how major the problem was. He knew she was expecting him to show up sooner or later and everything will be back to normal, and that’s the problem with little children, they have so much hope and expectations even if there was none.

A long sad sigh escaped his lips, “I love you too.” He looked down at the ground and wished he could be home eating dinner like every sunset. He wished he was sitting by his mother’s side helping Lily with her homework, or just watching the small little TV they had. However no, he can’t anymore. He’ll either be on the run for the rest of his life, or eventually he’ll get caught.

The stinging from his shoulder and back came to his mind once more. He hasn’t taken his jacket off since he made that run from the bar, but he knew that if he did, most of his shirt will probably be covered in blood.

An idea evolved in his mind, he could wait a week until his cuts and bruises heal a little, and then he could try and run to another city, start a new life, and later bring his family there too. It sounds very possible and a good idea. They could all start fresh and new. Even Tyler would become happier. It was very possible to run away, difficult but possible.
