The atmosphere was nice and cool; it was as if he was back in his room during the summer time. Heath felt like everything that has happened was only a dream, and now he was back safely in his room with his brother’s soft muttering as he tried to memorize his homework. However, the muttering was too pitched to be a teenage boy’s voice.
Too afraid that he would be back in his cold reality, Heath opened his eyelids slowly. At first his vision was a little blurry, and his eyes were trying to get used to the sunlight hitting his face. As soon as they adjusted, Heath opened them wide and he looked around the room. It was a jail cell alright, but it wasn’t his that he has been staying in for the past couple of days.
There was only on bunk bed, and the room had a small old television in the corner. Confused, Heath sat up and let out a groan, his back was very sore and his body ached. He felt as though it was the regular mornings when he used to work back at the pub. Every time he sat up from bed his body used to ache from all the whips Sira used to give him.
“Good, you are awake!” Heath hasn’t noticed that the muttering has stopped, and the top bunk shook slightly, as the person there moved towards the ladder to climb down. Quickly, a girl climbed down buzzing with energy. She was tall with hair tide up in a firm pony tail and big black eyes. Her smile was wide as though she has met her childhood best friend.
Confused and dazed Heath asked, “Where am I?”
“I’m Jasmine Jones,” The girl said excitedly, “I’m your punishment!”
Memories flooded back in, and he remembered his job and his promise to Demetrius. Jasmine Jones was standing in front of him looking like a very harmless girl. Heath wondered what she could have done for her to be locked up all alone in a cell.
“I have been waiting since ever for you to wake up,” Jasmine said, “I have so many games to play.” She rushed towards the table and the television, and then grabbed a black deck of cards. “I have never played with these before; you could teach me how to play.”
Heath snorted loudly, “You are kidding, right?”
The girl looked at him, her smile fading. “Why would I be kidding?” A big frown began to form, and her eyes looked at him murderously, “You think that I kidding around? You know how long I have been waiting for the infamous Heath to finally wake up? You were like sleeping beauty, except much uglier. I waited for five hours, but all you did was to stir around and cry out in pain. Then when you finally wake up, you think that I’m kidding around? I never kidding around in these things!”
“Hold up,” Heath said slowly, “Give me a break. I promise you as soon as I settle down, we will play your little game of cards. Also, it’s ‘I never kid around in these things’, not ‘I never kidding around in these things’. Clearly, you have never used slang words in your life before. Where were you, locked up in a basement or something?”
Jasmine blinked several times, confused. “What do you mean?” She asked, “I have been here since I was seven. Not in this cell of course, I had my own room and everything. Riley and I used to play around in the fields all the time!”
“Riley?” Heath asked shocked, “You mean Riley who is in the cell right near us?”
“Yeah,” Jasmine shrugged, “He’s my cousin. The only reason he is here is so he won’t leave me all alone in the prisons. Anyways, I saw that you two are friends from the way he stepped up to save you from the guard whipping you. You were crying out blood, which was so cool!”
“How do you know?” Heath asked, stunned and embarrassed of her knowledge.
“Oh they installed some security cameras lines to connect to my television, so whenever it is hard labor day, I turn on the TV to watch.” Jasmine said smiling, “It’s very entertaining on how many people collapse and die because of the beatings and the hard work. They reject the change and sometimes, even manage to kill someone beside them before they themselves die.”
