~Spoilers for City of Heavenly Fire~

Isabelle

Isabelle normally didn’t have a problem with holidays. Except when her parents pull the whole fake we’re a happy family junk and invite nearly the entire Shadowhunter community to the New York Institute. The Lightwood family was hosting the annual Christmas party. This was the first time they did this since Max’s death. The thought gave Isabelle a sick feeling in her stomach. She glanced at Jace who was greeting guest with Alec until Clary was to arrive. Magnus was coming later. Thus leaving Isabelle alone. Normally she would go and talk to anyone her parents might not approve of, but lately her mind has been completely overwhelmed with Simon.

Isabelle was leaning against the banister, staring at the front door hoping that he would walk through. Isabelle gave Clary his invitation. Clary told Isabelle that Simon said he would think about it. His regained most of his memories, but some of them were still blurry and fuzzy. Mostly the ones that involve Isabelle. On the brighter side, Simon was a Shadowhunter now. Isabelle would sometimes watch him train with Clary. He was doing really well. Not that she would ever admit that to him.

Isabelle continued to look down on the guest trickling in. Occasionally, she would get compliments on her slick, tight, floor length, long sleeved, silk ivory green dress. Isabelle’s hair was curled and pulled to one side. She had sparkly barrettes in her hair, that pinned it so it stayed on one side. The barrettes were a gift from Mangus, Isabelle didn’t know why he gave them to her, but they came with a note that read: “Pain heals with time. Scars fade. But when you fall in love for the first time, that never leaves. It will always be clouded with the what could have beens.”

Isabelle pretended not to be bothered by that note. For weeks she just shook of that feeling, she would brush it aside. But soon she couldn’t keep brushing the feeling away. At two am she ran to Magnus’s house. Banging on her door, she was close to tears. Thunder clapped overhead, and rain burst from the clouds. Just like how the tears were ready to burst from her eyes. She was covered standing in his doorway waiting for the warlock to answer. A few agonizing seconds later Magnus appeared in all his glory. He didn’t look mad or upset that Isabelle had came in the middle of the night. Instead he looked sad. His eyes held many years of sadness in them. He welcomed her in and she made her way to the living room. It looked like English royalty from the 1900s. It almost made Isabelle want to laugh, but she couldn’t really find it in herself. Not at the moment. Magnus sat across from her and she told him everything.

How she felt, what she felt, and how scared it made her feel. This was the first time she admitted it to anyone, including herself. She cried. But afterwards Isabelle felt a whole lot better. Once she got done threatening Magnus that if he ever told anyone she would personally decapitate his head. She thanked him for allowing her to come. He told her that this was a one time thing and that if she ever came but here at this horrible hour he would turn her into a fancy chair. She laughed and stole one of his umbrellas with the promise of returning it. She never did.

Alec tapped Isabelle on the shoulder. She turned to face her older brother, his eyes were filled with concern. It was then that Isabelle realized that the guest stopped coming through the door.

“Simon’s not here. Sorry. He didn’t tell Clary anything else. He might come later.” Alec tried to tell her but she had already turned away. She was headed to the ballroom. She could hear Alec calling her name, but she payed no attention. She reached the dance floor and made her way to the table of drinks. With a quick expert glance to see if her parents were near by Isabelle grabbed the sparkly liquor. She downed it in a few gulps. Just as she was leaving the table Alec grabbed her arm.
