Chapter 13:

After a long, stressful night of waiting in the hospital, Connor and I were finally given some information.

"Well, we'll try to operate as soon as possible, but we need someone to volunteer as a blood donor in case of an emergency use and we can only accept the use of a family member's blood with no records," a doctor explained to us in the waiting room.

"I'll do it," I volunteer tiredly.

"Perfect, you just need to fill out some forms to approve the use of your blood and we can start operating on your father as soon as possible. As soon as we start operating everything can begin. By the looks of it, we better get moving fast. Your father has not been in stable conditions but we can't operate without the extra blood on hand."

"Let's get going then Dr...?" I questioned.

"Vohn, Dr. Vohn," the doctor said before briskly escortiing me down a long hallway lined with doors and dull florescent lights. Walking through hospitals gave me the chills. "You ARE over 18... correct?" The doctor stopped.

"Not... exactly," I cower.

"We need a guardian's permission to allow you to donate blood to the hospital," the doctor looked at the clipboard in his hand.

"DON'T YOU GET IT?! I DON'T HAVE ANOTHER GUARDIAN," the lump in my throat was taking up my whole throat. I gasped for breath almost like my lungs were blocked. I gasped, tears filling my eyes. My knees suddenly felt weak.

"Um, are you...are you alright?" Dr. Vohn asked awkwardly.

"You know what? Actually no, no. I'm not alright. My mom- she died. And it wasn't even long ago and I just can't lose my dad now. I'll have no one anymore. And my brother, he's so young- he, my brother he can't grow up with just me and no parents. He deserves better- I deserve better," I had to lean against the wall for support. My vision blurred as I felt my knees give out from underneath me and I slammed against the cold tired floor of the hospital.

I felt a hand on my shoulder, a strong hand. "Hey, hey, c'mon, everything is alright, don't worry about anything. Let's, uh, get you, uh, something to drink and let you relax," I could hear Dr. Vohn's voice, but I wasn't processing anything he was saying.

The edges of my vision was turning black, slowing fading darker and darker.

"Hey, hey, c'mon, c'mon," The doctor's voice was getting lower and lower until it was so faint I couldn't even process it.

Until, finally, everything turned to black.
---------------
I woke up on a hospital bed with a tube up my nose. I sat up, jerking my neck back because the tube was too short. I tried to scream, but my throat was dry. I started to panic, causing a machine to start beeping loudly and rapidly.

A doctor rushed in- breathless, as if he'd been running towards my room.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

I nodded. I swallowed. I tried to speak. "Why," I croaked. "Am I here?" I asked slowly.

"I'm Dr. Fitz, in case you need anything. So anyways, you've been in here for about the last two hours- passed out. You passed out because of dehydration, fatigue, an stress. You're on the road to recovery, but it's best if you stay here for a night so we can properly feed you and get you the proper fluids," the doctor informed me.

"No, no," My voice was raspy. "I-I have to see my dad. Is he okay?"

"Just calm down, we'll bring your family in to see you," the doctor smiled warmly.

A huge smile broke out across my face and I didn't even care. "He's okay? I can't believe it. I was so worried. I mean I already lost my mom, thank goodness my dad is okay. I don't know what I would do if I lost my dad too."

The doctor looked puzzled. "What happened to your dad?"

My smile faded. "Paul? Paul Maragrets, he was here in the hospital..."

The doctor frowned too. "Oh, I heard about him from one of the nurses. They're sending him to surgery soon, I heard. He's lost a lot of blood and they just wanted to have extra blood on hand."

"So.. he's not okay?" My eyes watered, and I didn't try to hold them back.

"I-I'm not sure," Dr. Fitz said quietly.

I opened my mouth to speak, but not before a nurse burst into the room. "Fitz, we need you. It's the Margarets guy."

"I'll be back, stay calm- it'll all be okay," Dr. Fitz said quickly to me before racing out of the room with the nurse.

"Wait!" I called raspily. "That's my dad! Take me with you!" I ripped the plastic tube out of my nose and raced out of the room behind them. But I was so weak, I suddenly felt breathless and I'd barely moved down the hall. "STOP!" I cried, tears spilling out of my eyes.

"AVA!" I heard someone call from behind me.

I turned slowly to prevent getting dizzy. I squinted to help my eyes to focus in the dim lighting of the hallway. "Nick?" I croaked lowly.

"AVES," Nick called, now jogging towards me.

"You- you can't see me like this... get out of here," My knees gave out as I tried to run back into my room. I screamed in pain as I slammed against the tiled floors.

"Ava," Nick whisperd into the side of my neck. "Let me help you, please."

I elbowed him in the stomach. "I said GET OFF ME!" I cried.

Nick stumbled backwards. "Don't push me away, I'll leave you alone for now but you have to face your problems someday."

I hear Nicks footsteps become faint and saw, out of the corner of my eye, him look back before he got onto the elevator.
