Chapter 17: Darkness to Light

"Hey..." Tomomi spoke lowly, "Am I late?"

Mami was looking at her with tears of joy and relief. She couldn't believe that her angel and savior came to her rescue. Sobbing, she sluggishly replied, "No... you are just in time..."

That made Tomomi grin. "Good, I guess now we're even then!"

"Oh, I almost forgot." She quickly grabbed something out of her pocket and tossed it to Mami, but was too weak to catch it. It landed right beside her and was glowing white. "That's the pendant you forgot. Canta told me to give it to you in case it could come in handy."

Mami smiled weakly, "I'm sorry... for all the trouble I've caused..."

"Don't worry! Just focus on getting better!" she said holding onto her sword tighter, putting it in front of her, "I'll take care of her!"

Mariya was rubbing her eyes due to the sudden flash of light. "Light... I HATE the light!" She said angrily, "You... you insolent brat... who the hell do you think you are?"

"Canta... look after Mami, this may get a little ugly" she whispered, "If things are bad, run..."

Canta was hesitant on giving her an answer. She didn't think that Tomomi would come up with such a courageous, yet reckless idea to leave her for dead while one of friends lives. "I cannot abandon my Master..."

"Just do it!" she snapped back, "If things get rough, I want you to run... understand?"

Closing her eyes, she remained silent with thought. There was no way she could outrun a Shade Crawler, especially in the darkness where it calls home! It would be a futile effort, but at this rate, there wasn't any time to convince Tomomi.  Eventually, she nodded her head, "Okay, I understand."

Canta flew next to Mami, while Tomomi stood her ground, protecting her friend. Mariya finally stopped rubbing her eyes and stared down at Tomomi. "You're... that girl who slept at the White Phantom's house..."

White Phantom? She turned her head and gave a suspicious stare. When Mami noticed the stare, she quickly looked away. She doesn't mean Mami... right? "I don't know what you're talking about!" she yelled back.

Mariya shook her head, "You mean, you are that close to her and still hasn't told you about her former self?" she laughed out, "Such a trashy girl, she deserves to be punished more!"

"Don't call Mami trash!" she yelled holding her sword tighter, "White Phantom or not, she's my friend, and I won't tolerate anyone who call my friends trash!"

Mami felt a huge pain in her heart, knowing that Tomomi would surely die if she faced her alone. "T-Tomomi... y-you can't beat her..." she said weakly.

Tomomi ignored Mami's comment and pointed the shining sword at Mariya, "Give back those gloves, and you can leave with your life!"

Mariya burst out in laughter. "I don't intend on leaving, not without your heads!"

"You girls are surely bonded together by stupidity..." she had her arms to the sides and black smoke was rising from the blades that grew out of her arms, "But I do appreciate your recklessness, girl. It must that light that is emitting from your blade that gives you the courage..."

She then smirked and cocked her head. "But what if... that light suddenly disappeared? Would you panic and despair like that piece of trash over there...?"

"Don't call her trash!" She screamed out, "I'm going to make you eat those words!"

Stop it Tomomi! You're just rushing to your death! Please... leave me here to die and run!
