Chapter 5: Relaxation

The girl smiled at her brightly. “Ah, you must be Tomomi. It is an honour to meet you.” She knelt down and reached her hand out to Tomomi, “My name is Mami.”  

Tomomi crept back with her hands up in defense. “H-how do you know my name?”

Mami kept wearing her smile and pointed to her head. “I have mind reading powers!”

This girl has… mind reading powers?! There was no way in hell that she can do that… or can she? Could it be that she knows that the deepest darkest secrets?! “Back away from me… you freak!”

Mami felt hurt after hearing that word. “Is that… what you really think of me…?” she put her hands on her face and starting rubbing it. “If Tomomi says that I’m a freak, and then I must be an unwanted human being…!” she started to cry.

Canta and Tomomi exchanged looks of confusion and regret. Tomomi didn’t mean to say those words to her, it just… came out. It was due to her tiredness and stress that made her say such things. “Hey… Mami…” Tomomi stood up slowly and she walked towards her, “I… I didn’t mean to call you that. I hope you won’t take it personally…”

“Don’t worry…” she started to giggle under her breath and unveiled her face. She wasn’t crying, but she was being a really good actress. “I wasn’t crying. I just was just having a little bit of fun with you!”

“She’s an odd one…” Canta said lowly with her hand on her chin.

Mami looked at Canta pointing. “What’s her name Tomomi?”

“Her name is Canta,” she replied.

Canta stared back at Mami, surprised. “You can see me?”

Mami nodded her head. “Yep!”

“So it’s you who is the sister of John… the man who lives on the other side of the forest… descendant of Anne the wise… correct?”

These answers took Mami by surprise. “I didn’t think you’d be that smart Canta!” She was laughing and studied Tomomi. She saw that there was a little blood clot on her forehead, with spots of red all over her clothing. She looked very weary and tired… and seemed famished as well. “But first… I think it’d be best if you freshened up. Your travels must’ve been… quite troublesome… especially with that oaf.” She pointed behind her with her thumb.

“You mean… Rina?”

“Yes… that oaf.”

Well… it is true that she made her travels a little more difficult than it had be, but without her, she would not be standing talking to Mami. “Travelling with her… wasn’t so bad.” Tomomi lied, even though there was a little bit of truth in that, “She’s… quite a nice companion.”

Mami burst out in laughter. “Now THAT is a lie my friend. There is no need to cover up something that is the truth.” She wiped a tear off and faced the door. “Come, “she signaled them to follow her, “I know a very nice place where you can freshen up.”

Tomomi looked at Canta. She stared back in response.   

Mami looked back and saw that the pair weren’t moving. “What’s wrong? You don’t trust me?”

“Well…” Tomomi’s voice dragged on for a bit, “That’s part of it.”

Mami was scratching her chin, trying to think of something to convince Tomomi into following her. “Well then, I’m sure that a nice hot meal and a bath would really cheer you up.”
