Chapter 20: I hate you

Months had passed ever since Mariya had arrived at the village. During those months, John had introduced Mariya to all the villagers, including the ones that they she had met the other day. They were all friendly people and Mariya at first didn't know how to react, but their behavior slowly grew on her and she got used to their behaviors.

The villagers had managed to find a vacant house that she could stay in. She was starting to get used to the whole village thing such as helping out other people, growing food and hanging out with "friends". She never had experienced this type of lifestyle before, so it was a good change for her and there were times she was actually happy, another feeling which rarely came to her.

One day while she was picking up vegetables for the town's dinner party, she heard a mysterious voice, "It seems that you are enjoying yourself a little too much..."

Frozen in place, she dropped the vegetables and opened her eyes in fear. She knew who it was and hesitantly spoke, "M-master!" her voice shook as she looked up and saw her master covered from head to toe wearing a black cloak, "W-when did you get here?"

He ignored the question. "Have you found her?"

She answered back in silence.

"I grow impatient, Mariya." He said with his raspy voice, "You do remember why you were sent here?"

Mariya nodded.

"Then why is it taking so long?"

"I still haven't found that person wielding the weapon, Master." She quickly said, "Once I do, I will tell you as soon as possible!"

He turned his back to her. "I hope you aren't lying to me, Mariya."

Mariya suddenly felt terrified even though she was telling the truth. Ever since being one with her master, she knew that he was angry with her coming up empty handed. But there was nothing that she could do about it. There was no way that she could tell a lie to her master, which would only infuriate him more. "W-why would I lie to you?"

The black cloak remained unresponsive for a bit while Mariya anxiously waited for an answer. "I know you are not." He finally said slowly walking away, "But it seems that you are focused on other matters..." he stopped and turned his head around, "I hope you're not associated with those humans..."

She had no answer to his comments and panicked. What should I tell my Master? It's true that I've been hanging around with these people too long! She stared at her Master who crossed his arms, thinking of an answer.

"Well...?"

"I-It is a little difficult because new people always come and go..."

The black cloak stood there and she could tell that he didn't take that as a good answer. For reasons she didn't know, she was thinking about John. "B-But, there is a specific individual who may be a suitable candidate for the weapon!"

Again, the black cloak didn't seem too impressed with her answer. "Is that so..." he said with his voice dragged, "Very well then, I will leave you with your work. I do expect results from you, Mariya. I did not give you my powers so you can pick up some plants..."

His tone of voice was very bitter, and Mariya was scared once again. There was an awkward silence between the two and having nothing left to say, her master turned around and made his way to the forest off to the distance. Mariya could only sit there and watch her master slowly blending off into the distance.

After he walked out of her sights, she looked down to see the dropped vegetables to contemplate of her next sets of moves. She didn't know what to do, her plan to get John to introduce everyone in the village had worked out, but she came up empty handed when none of the people had triggered her inner self. Even with the new villagers coming in, she still had no luck finding this person. It seemed hopeless but there was no way that she going to give up. Her drive was strong, but it was fear that kept her in line. Even though she never seen her Master angry, it was probably better pleasing his every command.
