charlie and onyx were on their way over to charlie's parents house with their puppy nahkato. charlie's mother asked them over for dinner for charlie's birthday. after not seeing them for a few months charlie agreed. they were an hour into their two hour drive. nahkato was getting restless in the back seat. he jumped into the front and sat on onyx's lap.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY," charlie's mother yelled as they walked through the door.
"thanks, mom," he hugged the woman.
"where's onyx?" meghan asked.
"she's outside with nahkato," he answered.
onyx stepped behind him. charlie turned around to face his fiancé, nahkato running off into the house. they stepped into the kitchen where the rest of the family was.
"hi, onyx," charlie's mom greeted the girl.
"hi," onyx hugged charlie's family.
"happy birthday, charlie," charlie's brothers, patrick, ryan, and michael all shouted in sync.
"thanks guys," charlie sat down on a stool at the counter, onyx standing behind him. she wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him.
she whispered in his ear, "i love you."
"i love you," he looked up behind him, kissing her on the cheek. charlie looked up at his mom. "what are you making for dinner?"
"your favorite," she smirked at him.
"no way. chicken alfredo?"
"yessir," meghan laughed.
"fuck yeah."

"beer, charlie?" patrick asked his brother.
"ah, no thanks," he looked at onyx.
"you can have one. it's alright," she whispered.
"no, i don't want to drink around you," charlie gave the girl a peck on the lips. patrick raised his eyebrow at the couple.
"what about you, onyx?"
"no thank you." onyx had been having trouble the last couple weeks keeping herself from drinking since the night at jeremy's. she kept glancing over at the several beers sitting on the table in the living room. charlie seemed to be the only one who noticed this. he squeezed her hand.
charlie's father entered the living room and asked the same question his brother asked, "you want a beer, charlie?"
"no, i'm good. patrick just asked us," he chuckled slightly. "dinner almost ready?"
"yeah, it'll be done in a couple minutes."
charlie's mom called from the kitchen, "dinner's ready."
"or now," mr. gillespie replied, causing everyone to laugh. they all entered the kitchen, sitting around the large table. nahkato laid under the table below onyx's feet. he was sleeping soundly after playing with charlie's family all afternoon.
"where's your beer, charlie? never see you without one," meghan laughed.
"just didn't want one," he was growing slightly irritated.
"are you okay?" charlie's brother, michael, asked.
"yeah, why?"
"you just seem irritated that meghan asked why you didn't have a beer."
"well, you guys keep hounding me like i have to have one. i just don't want one."
onyx leaned over, "charlie, it's really okay." onyx whispered, "have one if you want."
"okay seriously, what is happening?" patrick looked at the couple. "why does onyx have to keep telling you you can have one?" patrick looked slightly uneasy. onyx suspected he though she was controlling him.
"you really want to know?" charlie looked from his family to onyx. onyx looked at him, gesturing for him to finish what he was saying. "onyx doesn't do the greatest around alcohol. she was an alcoholic. is an alcoholic." they all looked at her wide-eyed.
"oh god. i'm so sorry, onyx. i didn't-"
"no, patrick. it's okay. i know you didn't know. don't feel bad."
