storm warning

the country was supposed
to be a haven, away from the
city lights where all of
the shooting stars eventually died
and all the wishes which had plagued
his soul had disappeared in an instant

out here, within the empty fields
he was content with sitting here
relaxing on his patio, without a care
in the world for whatever had happened
outside of this place

his garden was tended to
but he regarded it as unfinished
and decrepit when he witnessed
a car in the distance, finding that
it was coming towards him

there was something that tightened
in his chest when he saw the familiar
shape which had shared their life
with him for the majority of it,
and the way they looked at the garden
and the way they looked at him
and the way they judged him
made him want to look away
but he kept his eyes trained on theirs

"you never told anybody
you were leaving"
"i didn't plan on it"
"that's really thoughtful of you"
"what do you care?"
"considering i came all this way
to see your dorky face, i care a lot"
"sorry, i'm just ... i didn't think
anybody would come find me"

"i had to find out where you were
from someone else, you know"
"my bad"
"do you know how bad it feels
to have to discover you
left from someone else?"
"you have no idea why i did it"
"then enlighten me"
