♧ 26: Lead the Way ♣
I readjust myself on the cushioned seats of Starbucks as I try my hardest to listen to Eleanor's and Paige's conversation. However, I quickly find myself drifting in and out of my own thoughts."So, you're telling him tonight?" I hear Eleanor say to Paige.
How can Trinity say that about me? Out of everything she calls me ungrateful? I mean, yesterday she practically called me a gold digger. Does she honestly think I'd use the boys for their money?
How can she think that?
"Yeah, I'm going to have to," Paige replies.
I continue twirling my straw in my drink as they talk. How the hell does Trinity think she is? How is she to talk? It's not like I'm dating anyone from the band and I have no intention of going on living like this. I will pay the boys back for every dime they spent on me. I will pay them back even if it kills me because it's not like I can have that on my conscience. I'm not going to let myself fall into their debt because when it comes down to it, I can't live there forever.
As much as I wish I could.
"What about the charity thing tomorrow?" Eleanor continues to ask.
But I can't help but think that maybe Trinity is right. I've been living with the boys for a couple months now and what have I done for them? I've been racking my brains for something that I've done and nothing. I've got nothing because I've done nothing for them. How can I be so ungrateful?
How could I be so selfish? And the worst thing is, that's exactly what I called Trinity.
"Maddy."
How can Trinity be able to call me out on something like that? This whole time, I thought it was she who was the ungrateful bitch and yet, I'm doing the same thing. How did I not see that?
"Maddy!"
How could I be so ignorant?
"Hey, Maddy!"
And suddenly the loud yell at my ear causes me to jump up in my chair. I look around with shocked eyes as I spot Paige and Eleanor staring at me. Running my hand through my dark hair, I take a deep breath.
"Sorry, I was spacing out," I explain.
"Yeah I could tell," Eleanor laughs.
"You know, you've been doing that all day," Paige says narrowing her eyes at me.
"I have?" I ask, although I wouldn't doubt it for a second.
"Well yeah," Paige continues. "Unless you usually put Orange Juice in your cereal."
I scrunch my nose at the though of doing that. "I did that? And I ate it?"
"You pretty much chugged the bowl," Paige laughs.
"And you let me?" I ask, raising my voice in shock.
"I tried telling you!" Paige says defensively. "But you kept eating it."
I think back to this morning, but in all honesty, I can't even remember if I ate breakfast. But according to Paige's story, I did. "Oh," I sigh, continuing to stir my straw, this time in a figure eight motion. "Okay."
"Are you alright, Maddy?" Eleanor asks as she scoots forward in her chair.
"Uh, yeah I'm great," I say and the moment it's out of my mouth I realize how unconvincing I am.
"No, something is definitely up," Eleanor says confidently.
"Yeah, what is it?" Paige asks, she too is leaning forward in her chair.
I peel my gaze away from my drink and look at both of them. I should just come out and ask them. I mean, I've been thinking about it all day and now I can get someones opinion on it.
I take a deep breath. I'm just going to go out and say it. No sense in beating around the bush. "Do you guys think I'm taking advantage of my situation?"
"What?" Eleanor asks.
"Taking advantage of what?" Paige questions.
"Of you guys," I explain. "I mean, do you honestly think I'm not pulling my weight in the house?"
"What weight is there to pull?" Paige looks at me skeptically.
"I don't know," I shrug. "I mean, I could probably clean the house more than I do and maybe cook dinner sometimes."
"Cook and clean?" Eleanor repeats. "You're not a house servant."
"Seriously, Maddy. What brought this on?" Paige asks, concern written all over his tan face.
"I just want to know if I'm being ungrateful for everything you guys have done for me," I explain.
"Ungrateful? Where are you getting all of this?" Paige asks. "Wait a second, is this about the secret Zayn was talking about? Are you okay? Is something wrong?"
"Secret?" Eleanor repeats.
"What? No. It's not," I reassure them. "It's just-"
I pause, thinking of a way to explain this to them without mentioning my run in with Trinity. Is there a way I can even remotely tell them how I feel without giving away my secret?
No, there isn't.
"Oh no, did you lose your job at Beatz?" Paige asks, putting her hands up to her chest. "Is that why you're freaking out because you don't know how you're going to pay for everything?"
"What? No, that's not it," I say shaking my head. "That's not it at all."
"Then what is it?" Eleanor asks.
"It's just," I pause as I try to find the right words to say. "I've recently been told that I'm taking advantage of my situation with you guys and that I'm being selfish and I just wa-"
"Who told you that?" Paige asks, her jaw hanging in shock.
"Does it matter?" I ask quickly.
"Wait, let me guess," Eleanor says as she puts her hand up. "Was it Trinity?"
"Um, yeah it was," I answer, keeping my head down.
"Of course it was," Eleanor mutters shaking her head in disappointment.
"I can't believe her," Paige says. "She has no right to say that. Maddy, you can't possibly think she has a point?"
"Well, I don't know," I shrug. "At first I didn't but maybe she does? Maybe I am bein-"
"Okay, you need to stop right there," Eleanor says as she places her glasses on top of her head, revealing her hazel eyes. "First off, Trinity is a complete, and excuse me for saying this, bitch so I wouldn't take anything she says to heart. And second, I don't want you to think for one second that you are selfish because, excuse me, whose charity event is this? Who wanted to help the homeless? You did. Trinity can't stand the idea that someone besides her is going to be getting the attention so she is putting you down."
I stare at Eleanor as she rants on and on about Trinity. I honestly had no idea Eleanor could be so blunt about everything and in all honesty, I think that's awesome. For once in a long time, I feel as though someone feels the same annoyance towards this girl. The same annoyance that I felt coming from everyone at Paul's wedding is back.
Thank god.
"Wow," I laugh as Eleanor stops ranting.
"Who knew Eleanor could unleash that much anger," Paige laughs.
Eleanor removes her sunglasses before running her hand through her wavy hair. "Sorry, but she annoys me to no end," Eleanor admits. "Hearing that was the last straw. This girl is deluded and I'm serious Maddy, don't listen to a word she says."
Hearing Eleanor say all this just makes me realize how stupid I was to even consider what she claimed to be the truth. How could my feelings be so easily manipulated? How could I let Trinity tell me what to think?
God I'm dumb.
"Yeah, I see that now," I say as I smile at Eleanor, "Thank you."
"Of course," Eleanor nods as she brings her coffee to her mouth and takes a sip.
"And plus, Maddy," Paige adds. "You really can't think that we don't love having you at the flat. You really have no idea how happy I am that I got to meet someone like you."
I can't help but smile at her sincerity. "Me too, Paige."
And it's true. I honestly don't know what I would do if Niall hadn't almost ran me over that day. I can't imagine my life right now without these people.
"But when did she say this?" Paige asks. "Like did she just come out and say it? I don't get what she has against you."
I pause once more, recollecting my thoughts. This is it. I told Paige that I'd tell her what Zayn was talking about and here is my perfect chance. I don't even care if Eleanor hears.
I take a deep breath.
"Trinity hates me because she thinks I'm going to steal Niall away from her," I say, returning my gaze back to my drink.
"What?" Paige asks. "That's crazy. I mean, why would she think that? It's not like you like him or anything."
I freeze. Suddenly, I don't know how to react. I feel like I'm back in middle school where you're talking with a friend and then all of a sudden your crush passes by and all your friends stop talking and just stare at you. I feel on the spot and I have no idea how to react. Do I just go out and say, "Of course, I like Niall! How can I not like him?" or can I simply take the elementary approach and deny liking any boy due to cooties?
However, what I didn't know, was that my silence would tell them exactly what I was thinking.
"Oh my god," Eleanor gasps, smiling from cheek to cheek.
"You do like him!" Paige says excitedly.
I suddenly look up at the tables around us, checking to see if anyone had over heard us. Thank goodness there really isn't a lot of people here. "God, will you be quiet?" I whisper harshly. "Do you want the whole world to know?"
"Sorry," Paige says, sinking back in her seat. "But oh my god, Niall? Really?"
I suck in my lower lip nervously. "Is that weird?"
"Weird?" Eleanor repeats. "That's so cute. I knew you guys liked eachother."
I look at her in surprise. "What? You did?" How could she know that? Eleanor hasn't even really been around with Niall and I. How could she possibly think I had a thing for Niall?
"How did you know that?" Paige asks.
"The night before Paul's wedding. At the table," Eleanor explains. "Maddy, you went up to answer a call and a couple minutes later I saw Niall get up and follow you out. You two looked so cozy on the balcony."
"You caught on that quick?" Paige asks as her jaw dropped. "God, I really am slow."
"Don't worry, you were even slow when you had to recognize your feelings for Harry," Eleanor laughs as she pats Paige's arm reassuringly. "You'll learn."
"Yeah, I swear, this girl is the reason Harry and I are together," Paige says nodding towards Eleanor.
"Really?" I ask, shocked. "I thought Louis was?"
"Oh yeah," Paige mutters as her eyes grow large. "Um, what I meant was Louis introduced us and Eleanor took it from there."
I nod my head, trying to understand. Why do I even bother? Paige's and Harrys relationship really makes me confused.
"Okay, I thought we were talking about Maddy and Niall here?" Eleanor cuts in.
"Yes we are," Paige says quickly. "So, why didn't you tell us sooner?"
"Because, he had Trinity," I answer easily.
"Really? That's your reason?" Eleanor says. "That can easily change. I think we all know that relationship is going downhill fast."
"Really? Why do you say that?" I ask, trying hard to mask my excitement.
"Well, Louis was telling me how Trinity has been on Niall's case about eating sparingly and we all know how Niall loves his food," Eleanor explains. "I'm honestly surprised he lasted this long with her."
I nod my head. I knew Trinity is nagging Niall about what to eat, but I didn't actually think he listened to her. When we went to the fasturaunt earlier this week he eat like a starving elephant. Was it because he was making up for food he couldn't eat when he was with Trinity?
"Besides," Paige adds. "I'd much rather have you and Niall together than Trinity."
"Really?" I ask, surprised.
"Well, yeah," Paige smiles. "I mean, now that I think about it. You guys were always so overly friendly with each other and not to mention yesterday when we had to wait for you because you were with Niall. It all makes sense now."
It was like I could see everything click into place for Paige and I admit, it's kinda funny how oblivious she really is. And now that they both know, it feels good to actually talk about it, rather than bottle it up. Zayn knew, but we never really talked about it on any in-depth level.
Why didn't I tell them sooner?
"How long have you liked him?"
"I don't know the exact moment," I answer truthfully. "But pretty much since he asked for me to move in with everyone."
"That long?" Paige says.
"Wait," Eleanor says. "Before Niall and Trinity were together, you two didn't have anything between you guys, did you?"
I lick my lips. I don't know how to answer this question without sounding like some over-attached girl. Because yes, I did feel like we had something between us and yet, I know that's not true because at the end of the night, Niall picked Trinity.
"I wish," I mutter, almost surprised at how much truth was in those two words.
"Me, too," Paige agrees.
"Okay. It's official," Eleanor says, placing her hands on the table. "I ship Naddy."
Naddy?
~*~
"Okay, was there anything else you needed before I leave?" I ask Montey as I throw my backpack over my shoulder.
Montey looks around, "Did you already clear out the back room?"
I almost flinch when he asks that. Yes, I did and it nearly took me my whole shift just to get everything cleaned up. There was an unbelievable amount of stains on the floor, from what I believe is soda. Not to mention the amount of boxes that were up there that I had to clear out.
"Yeah, I did," I answer, pushing back the awful memories.
"Okay, thank you. You just saved me a bunch of money on a cleaning service," Montey smiles.
I purse my lips in annoyance. "You really are cheap."
It's official. I'm being employed by Mr. Krabs himself by the way he is so cheap.
"Oh, speaking of cheap," Montey continues on. "I've been meaning to ask you, where are you living?"
This catches my attention. Why is he suddenly asking me this? "Where am I living?"
"Yeah, where do you sleep everynight?" He continues. "I stopped by your old apartment and the land lady said you weren't there anymore."
"Oh yeah, I don't live there anymore," I answer, taking hold of my strap.
Montey puts down the pen he was using and looks up at me. "Look, Maddy," Montey begins, "I'm not asking for the story, I just want to make sure that my employees have a place to stay because if you don't, there is a small room on the second floor of the shop that you can use if you need it."
Is he offering me a place to live? Where was this offer a couple of months ago? I want to smile, but I can't help but remember that I do have a place to live. Only a couple of hours ago, I was talking to Paige and Eleanor about how much I love being there. I can't just leave.
"Thank you, Montey," I smile. "I really appreciate the offer, but I have a place."
"That's good, I'm relieved," Montey nods. "Just know, the offer will always be available."
Although I have no intention of using it, I nod, "I'll remember that, thank you."
"Well, you better get going," Montey says nodding towards the exit. "I think someone is waiting for you."
Curiously, I look over my shoulder and am surprised as to what I see. Niall is leaning against the wall, looking down at his cell phone. Just by the way he is moving his hands, I can tell he is playing Temple Run.
"Okay, see you Montey," I wave.
"See you tomorrow," He replies.
"Tomorrow? I don't work tomorrow," I say. I could've swore I took tomorrow off.
"Oh, well I'm going to that charity thing," He replies easily.
"Wait, are you telling me that you, Mr. Cheapskate, actually bought a ticket?" I ask in surprise.
"Well, it's a good cause and I haven't had an off day in years," He answers shrugging his shoulder dramatically. "Now, scram because I have no intention of paying you for overtime."
I crack a smile, pushing open the entrance door. "That's more like it. I'll see you tomorrow then."
Closing the door behind me, I look up and see that Niall has now put away his phone and has leant off the the wall. He has one hand in his front pocket and a full smile spread across his lips. I return his smile.
"Hey," He greets.
"Hey," I repeat. "Uh, what are you doing here?"
"What? Can't a lad walk you home?" Niall asks, raising an eyebrow at me.
"Well, yeah," I smile. "I just wasn't expecting you to be here."
"Well, Paul has a lot to worry about. He has the that interview thing with Zayn and then a meeting for the charity tomorrow," Niall shrugs. "So, I figured I'd be your escort tonight. If that is alright with you?"
Is that alright? Does he really need to ask this? However, as much as I want to smile, I try my hardest to keep calm. "I think I can live with that."
"Well, then. Shall we?" Niall smiles before extending his arm down the road. It takes me a moment to realize that he is directing me towards the complete opposite way of the flat.
"You do realize the flat is this way," I laugh as I point over my shoulder.
"I know," Niall answers. "I was actually hoping I could show you something first."
I look at him in surprise. He has something to show me? Without a second thought, I say, "Well, okay then. Lead the way, Ireland."
~*~
"Okay, here it is," Niall says.
Immediately, I stop walking and look up at the large building. The first thing I notice is the dome on top of the building. At first glance, I thought it was a smaller arena, but then I took notice of the sign above the front entrance.
"A planetarium?" I ask, looking back at Niall.
"Yeah, I figured this could be a way you can watch the stars from within the city," Niall says as if this isn't the most heartfelt gesture.
I can't help but smile as I look back up at the building. I've only been to one planetarium before and that was for my astrology class back in high school and it was significantly smaller than this. Inside my pocket, I suddenly become aware of my lucky glow-in-the-dark star more than usual.
"Well, do you want to go in?" Niall asks me.
Without hesitation, I nod my head and before I can even say something, Niall reaches forward, taking hold of my hand. I'm taken off guard by the sudden contact, however, maybe Niall is just excited about this. Maybe he has never been to a planetarium before. I don't know. But what I do know is that whatever the reason may be, I'm not complaining.
I concentrate on Niall's warm skin against mine as he leads me into the building. A rush of cool air hits us as we pass through the door. The woman at the desk looks up at us and for a moment I think she is going to stop us. However, once she spots Niall, she nods once before returning her gaze to her laptop.
"Do you know these people?" I ask as Niall pulls me down this long hallway.
"I just met her today actually," Niall responds. "Now, come on, it's just through this door."
Niall pulls me along and I can't help but wonder if everything is alright. I mean, what brought this on? Him showing up at my work, taking me here? Not to mention the fact that something seems different about him but I can't put my finger on it.
Before I can come to a conclusion, Niall slowly comes to a stop before opening a large wooden door. Inside, I can only see one light in the far corner. Niall pulls me inside and I strain my eyes onto the only source of light as I let Niall guide me. His fingers laced through mine continue to warm me in the chilly room. I half expected him to drop my hand the moment we got into the room, however that's not what happened. He's just casually holding my hand as if it's the most natural thing in the world. As if it's not affecting his heart rate like it is mine. As if he doesn't feel how sweaty my palms are getting.
As if he forgot he has a girlfriend.
A girlfriend.
And with the thought of Trinity, I unlace my fingers and pull my hand away from his. As Niall suddenly looks at me, I quickly run my hand through my hair as if that's what I intended to do all along. Due to the darkness, I can't see if Niall cared or not.
"So," I say, stepping around the small podium that held the light. "Do you know how to work this bad boy?"
"I just learned today, actually," Niall admits, scratching the back of his head.
He met the front desk lady today and he learned how to use the planetarium controls today also?
Then, with the flip of a few switches, the roof suddenly lights up. Looking up, my eyes widen at the slowly moving mini night sky that is on display above us. If it weren't for the fact that we didn't shut the door the whole way, I'd actually think we were outside underneath the stars.
"Wow," I mutter in amazement.
"I know, right?" Niall agrees stepping next to me. "Amazing, huh?"
I nod as I continue to look at each star. Instinctively, I reach into my pocket and feel around for my glow-in-the-dark star that Niall had given me. Once I feel it's pointed edges, I pat it once before retracting my hand.
"I can't believe you learned all this today," I say. "You must've had one hell of a day."
"I guess you could say that," Niall agrees. "I always passed this place on my way to Trinity's but I never went in. Until today, of course. It reminded me of you and our conversation about how you can never see the stars as well in the city."
As he says this, I can't help but think, was he here earlier with Trinity? Did they come here for a date and learn how to use all the equipment? I can just picture the two of them here, standing over this same podium, flipping switches to their hearts content.
I take a quick step away from the podium. However, just as I step away, so does Niall.
"Um, do you want to, uh," Niall says nervously as he points toward the center of the room. "Lay down?"
My eyes follow his finger and I'm surprised to see a pile of pillows laid out. I'm not sure if this is a feature to all Planetariums or if this one is just well prepared but, I'm slightly impressed. However, I'm still concerned. Are these the same pillows he and Trinity would've used?
In my silence, Niall continues, "I mean, you don't have to, but I hear it's more comfortable."
I look at him and immediately smile at his nerves. Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt to lay down. "Okay, thank you."
I drop my back pack next to the podium before settling myself down, laying my head against the pillows. There is no doubt, this is so much more comfortable than standing up at looking. Without looking away, I hear Niall take a few steps towards me before stopping abruptly as if he isn't sure if he can lay down or not.
Taking the initiative I say, "You know, you can lay down too. It'll be awkward if I'm the only one."
"Oh," Niall laughs. "Okay."
Before I know it, Niall has settled himself next to me. Once he is down, we fall into a long, comfortable silence. Focusing my gaze on the stars above us, I can hear Niall's steady breathing. In and out. Like clockwork. Slowly my gaze falls from the ceiling to mine and Niall's knees. Both of mine are brought up, whereas only Niall's right knee is; which happens to be the one closer to mine.
Suddenly, I feel Niall's arm press up against my shoulder. I try hard to to react to the sudden contact, but my body is not in sync with my mind. How is it that Niall can simply touch me once and my body feels like it's going into overdrive. Everything just seems to collapse at the first contact and then, the longer we touch, the faster everything inside me works.
This can't be healthy. I feel like I'm loosing my mind.
Before I can completely spazz out, Niall breaks the silence, Pointing up at a specific part of the roof. "You see those stars right there?"
Following his finger, I try to pinpoint the group of stars he is talking about, "Yeah."
"Those are the stars that make up the Big Dipper," Niall informs me.
As he says this, I look again in skepticism. Right where Niall had pointed, there isn't the North Star, which means that the Big Dipper can't be there. If it's one constellation I know, it's the Big Dipper.
I chuckle softly and I feel Niall turn his head towards me, "What?"
"That's not that Big Dipper," I tell him, restraining a laugh.
"Are you sure?" He asks curiously, looking back to the stars.
"Well, I'm pretty sure," I answer. "The North Star isn't even on this map so, the Big Dipper isn't either."
"Are you sure?"
I nod.
"Oh, well I guess there is no impressing you tonight, huh?" Niall mumbles disappointedly. "So, i'm guessing you know a lot about this stuff? Constellations?"
"No, I just know the Big Dipper," I laugh. "So, if you would've told me that it was some other constellation, I probably would've believed you."
"Are you kidding me? Well, the Big Dipper is the only one that I actually know," Niall says lamely.
"Yeah, me too," I laugh.
"I remembered it because it reminded me of a giant ice cream scooper," He says with a small chuckle.
I nod slowly. "You know, now that I think of it, it does."
"And the Little Dipper is the bowl," Niall continues.
I can't help but laugh at his references. "Well, it seems like you learn best when comparing everything with food."
"Yeah, but then learning would always make me hungry," Niall points out.
"Very true," I say. "God knows, the world would be out of food if you ever became a genius."
Niall laughs. And again, I feel the need to reach into my pocket. Once I feel the familiar star, I pull it out, keeping my hand clasped around it.
I can feel Niall shift, and suddenly his body is laying on it's side facing me with his arm tucked underneath his head. A full smile is on display, letting me catch the slight twinkle of his braces under the fake night sky. Even his skin is glowing underneath this light. Almost automatically, I follow Niall's lead and turn onto my side so we can face each other. Gazing into Niall's eyes, I feel like someone I'm looking at someone different. There is no doubt that this is the same Niall, but I have a feeling that something has changed. The blue in his eyes is more clear, his smile reaches his whole body, and his whole demeanor feels more relaxed.
I smile. "You seem different tonight."
"I do?" Niall asks, almost in a whisper.
I nod. "Yeah, but it's nice." Really nice.
His smile widens. "I feel different. I just always had a lot on my mind lately and now, I'm just whatever. Let what happens, happen."
Let what happens, happen. That should be the way I live my life. "That sounds good to me."
Niall doesn't respond. Instead, he reaches out his left arm and takes a single strand of my hair that had fallen down on my face, and slowly tucked it behind my ear. He dragged his finger across my face slowly as he did so and I felt the need to close my eyes and enjoy the feel of his touch. However, I moment passes by too quickly and before I know it, Niall retracts his hand.
"So," Niall says, "Have you picked out a favorite star?"
"Favorite?" I ask, looking at him questioningly. "How can I pick a favorite?"
"By choosing one you like best," He says easily. I can just hear the smile on his voice.
"Well, I can't really chose one," I point out. "They all look the same to me."
Niall nods, acknowledging my claim. "True, but I was kinda hoping," Niall says as he reaches out once more.
However this time, he didn't reach for my face. This time it was my hand. Once he took hold of it, he sat himself up. Glancing down at my clenched hand, his slowly traced my fingers as if he was too afraid to open my hand. As his fingers glide over me, I can't help but think back to his guitar. The way he moved his hands up and down carefully, making sure not to hold on too hard.
Then, slowly, Niall takes my fingers and one by one he pulls them up, revealing what I held in my palm.
"I was kinda hoping you would pick this one," Niall finally finishes as we both stare down at the glowing star that is settled on my palm.
Out of all the stars, this one is definitely my favorite. I know I said that they were all the same, but in this case, I was wrong. This star is different. It's the star that Niall had given me all those weeks ago and I still carry it with me everywhere. How did Niall even know I had it? I mean, I even forgot I was even holding it.
This night turned out completely different than what I had expected. Laying here in a Planetarium with Niall holding my hand is the last thing I expected. In fact, I don't even know why this is happening. I'm throughly confused because right now, this feels different than every other time I had been with Niall. I can't even tell if this is actually happening or if it's just my mind playing tricks on me again. I mean, it wouldn't be the first time I had turned something Niall had done for me in the wrong way. This could just be Niall being friendly like he is. He is a sweet guy and i've always been aware of that. He's doing this for me becuase he is my friend. That's it. Nothing has changed. But I still can't help but think that something is different, but I don't know what.
However, what I do know, is that I'll be telling Paige about this.
Every single detail.____________________________________________________
