The sound of silence

Meredith POV:
I tossed and turned emerging from my slumber. I jolted out of bed with my body coated in a fresh sleet of sweat. My heart pounding out of my chest, I looked around the room and remembered where I went last night after Derek and I fought. I dragged my phone off the night table and checked my contacts. I called Derek hoping that what felt and said to him was just a dream.
"Meredith?" He answered confused on why I was calling him.
"Hi, I need to ask you something" I took deep breaths in and out.
"Of course, anything. What is it?" I thought about his words for a moment before opening my mouth. "What did I say last night?" I could see his confused look through the phone as he thought. "Um well we fought, and you told me that I was selfish for wanting more work time than family time. And you called me on the blame" his voice was breaking as the traumatic memories hit him in the chest. "Ok, did I ask for a divorce" he took a deep breath preparing for the worst. "No, but Meredith please we can work." I took a sigh a of relief as my heart palpitations regulated. "Oh thank god" I breathed through the microphone. "Mer?" I opened my eyes again from the relic and just said, "don't move, I'm coming home" I hung up the phone before he could answer and packed my things.

I loaded them into the car and got in, driving as fast as I could to get back home of course I hit every red light. I finally pulled in the driveway as it was now dark outside. I didn't even get my thing out of the car before I saw Derek standing on the front porch. He looked over at me and all I did was smile. I dropped my bags and ran to him, jumping in his arms. I held him tight as my tear stained his shirt. He held me back just as tight as I was holding him. "Meredith!" He kissed my neck and buried his face into the crook as I cried. "Oh god, I had this horrible dream that I asked for a divorce. And I left you and Harper. It was horrible, and it made me realize that I can't live without you ok. Your my fresh air, my half heart. And the love of my life. So don't ever pull that sh*t again!" I held him close once more and pulled back to kiss him. "Don't worry, I didn't take the offer. I'm back, it's ok." I continued to kiss him until we heard the baby monitor go off. "I guess Harper is just as upset" we both laughed as we walked inside and up to our baby's room.

We got there and saw her fussing so Derek picked her up and soothed her. Within seconds she was sleeping again. "Oh thank god that's as a dream" I pulled him by his hands out the door and shut it behind us. "What are you doing?" He asked with a smirk, I bit my lip and then pulled him in for a kiss. "I'm apologizing" he pulled away and looked at me. "No, I did this. Not you" we held onto my cheek as I pulled him in again. "Well then you better make it up to me" I winked and then ran off to our bedroom. Him following after me.

Derek POV:
I was so glad to have my wife back. And most of all... my family. I really wouldn't be able to live without her. She was also my air. And my full heart. I fell asleep with her wrapped in my tight embrace. I felt her hair against my neck and her chest rose and fell as mine did. She was so perfect. Stunning. And I couldn't wait for more to come.

Of course good moments wash away like the tide as I was awoken by my alarm clock. That's when you really don't want to save lives. You want to stay and bask in the warmth of your lover. "Mm good morning" she rolled over and softly kissed me. "Good morning" I kissed her back. The warm sun shines through the glass windows and onto her back as I play with her hair. The moment seems so perfect up until. "Whaaaaaa!" A loud screeching noise comes from the baby monitor. We both look up at it and surly enough Harper us awake. "Looks like somebody else is saying good morning too" she laughed picking up the monitor. She got out of bed and a few minutes later, she came back with a semi calm baby. "Look there's daddy, see." She pointed to me while looking at the baby. "Come here my princess" she handed me Harper and she snuggled right up into my arms. She fell asleep again as mer and I watched her. "Well, she was just being a suck"

"We're ok right" Meredith asked while looking at the baby. I looked up to her and smiled. "Ya, I mean we have to work on methods but other than that, we're ok" she laughed a little as the baby started to squirm. We got up and placed pillows on the rims of the bed as we got ready. "Any surgery's today?" She asked while brushing her hair. "No, but I do have a meeting in... 15 minutes" she needed her head and I kissed her goodbye. "Ok, love you"
"Love you too" I walked out the door and got in the car. I drove to the hospital and parked my car in the usual spot. I raced to the front door as I was already 5 minutes late. I went to the North wing meeting room and saw Richard waiting for me.

I shook his hand and sat down across from Jennings. "Derek, we brought you here to talk..." I looked at him confused and then nodded my head for him to continue. "We want to offer you a new position-" I cut him off before he could say anything else. "Wait, I almost lost my marriage and family because of this job. It's hard enough being the chief of neurology and neurosurgery let alone run another position." They looked at each other and then looked back at me. "Look, I'm sorry Richard but I can't... I love my wife, and my daughter" I walked out of the room without a hesitation of going back in. I walked to my office and sat down at my desk. I pulled out my phone and called Meredith. "Hey" I said into the speaker. "Hey you! Guess what!" I smiled and then asked. "What?" With a little giggle. "Harper... said her first word!!" I was shocked, what did she say? I asked myself. "And guess what she said?" She was jumping up and down with joy. "What?" I was now also super excited. "Mama!" Now she was gloating in my face. "Oh bold. Thanks Harper!" She laughed on the other side of the phone.

"I'll be back at 7:00 tonight"
"Ok I love you, say I love you to daddy" I smiled and then said I love them to both of them before I hung up. "Ok let's work" and I sat at my desk the rest of the day working.
