"Hey girls, it's our lucky day. I think I just found the last free compartment," David shouted as he scurried through the door and stowed his things in the overhead compartment. Lia and I looked at each other, happily. As late as we were, we had actually no hope of having our own compartment, expecting each of us to have to sit with other people.
With a relieved sigh, I plopped down on the padded bench seat and as Lia and David sat down opposite me, I had the entire space to myself.
"So, is there anything new with you guys? Apart from what was already in your letters?", I asked them both, trying to start a conversation. Since we wrote to each other over the holidays, each already knew what the other had been up to, like how Lia and David had spent almost the whole holiday together.
"Oh you know, not much really...", David said but Lia quickly interrupted him. "Except that we're together now." They both had huge smiles on their faces as they announced it.
"So you tell me in your letters what you had for lunch the day before but not that you're together now? You guys are terrible," I said with mock shocked tone. However, I wasn't really surprised considering how much time the two of them had spent together in the last year. "But I'm happy for you guys... I'm not surprised but I am happy," I added with a smile.
"I'm going to go find Fred and George," I said after the train had been moving for a while, "I haven't heard from them since the Quidditch final." The two nodded at me in agreement, probably the lovebirds were happy to be alone anyway.
I wandered around the train, looking from one compartment to the next until I finally found the twins. Surprisingly, on the way to them, I found that some compartments were unoccupied or barely occupied. But the compartment Fred and George were in was completely full of Gryffindors. I knew the people in it from Quidditch, because I recognised the three chasers Angelina, Alicia and Katie as well as Lee Jordan, who always commented on the games. As the train compartment was full, I decided to just drop in. I knocked on the door so as not to just barge in and draw attention to myself before opening it.
"Fred, George! How are you?", I asked, happy to see that they were both alive and well. "After all, I haven't heard from you since the Quidditch final. I was beginning to worry Hogwarts would have to do without your pranks now."
"No one's getting rid of us that easily," they both replied in chorus, which brought a smile to my face.
"How are you?" added George. "Did you fight the Death Eaters with your parents?" asked Fred curiously, he was dead serious.
"I'm the same as ever. And Fred... no... of course not. If my parents had seen me do it, they probably would have killed me sooner than the Death Eaters," I replied to them both, shaking my head. I stood in the doorway for a few more seconds until an uncomfortable silence fell over the group, because no one really knew what to say now. "I'm going back to my friends now too," I said.
"Why don't you stay a little longer? You don't know the others yet," Fred said quickly. I was almost gone again when I turned to him. "You don't have any more room. I can't sit anywhere."
"Of course you can." Fred winked at me and faster than I could comprehend he had pulled me onto his lap. He put his arms around me, causing me to blush.
As if it was the most normal thing in the world that I sat on his lap, he introduced me to the other Gryffindors and I chatted with them a bit, mainly about Quidditch. However, it seemed to me that the others didn't really like me, because the conversations were all a bit too forced.
Probably because I'm a Slytherin, I thought, starting to feel uncomfortable. I would rather just be with Fred and George, at least they didn't have a problem with me and that despite me breaking Fred's collarbone. So I said goodbye to the group but just before I could get up from Fred's lap I saw Malfoy standing outside the compartment, a disapproving look on his face. He looked me in the eye and shook his head. It was as if I could hear all his snide thoughts without him having to open his mouth.
As quickly as he had come, he was gone and I said goodbye to the twins. I took my time with it, not wanting to run into Malfoy in the corridor. After all, he disappeared in the same direction I had to go.
As I left the compartment, I looked around to my right and left and was glad not to see the blond Slytherin anywhere. Therefore, I started to walk back to Lia and David. I was looking forward to having my own seat again, even though I wasn't going to complain about sitting on Fred's lap.
I was just passing the witch with the cart full of sweets when I was suddenly grabbed by the arm and pulled into a compartment.
"What the hell are you doing?" I shouted in horror, which brought a smirk to Malfoy's face.
"Why do you always act like this? You're such a dramaqueen." he said dismissively and leaned back in his seat, not expecting an answer from me. "Is there something going on between you and the Weasley?"
"Jealous, Malfoy?" I countered, mustering him on. He was wearing a black suit and looking sort of older than he was before the holidays. Not much had changed in his platinum blond hair but for some reason he looked better... more grown-up. Even though he didn't behave like that at all.
"The last time I saw you with him in the dungeon I thought you were having a weak moment, but it seems you really like the destitute. Why should I be jealous of that," he mocked, which is why I turned my eyes away angrily. "You shouldn't do that all the time," he commented dryly on my behaviour.
"Is there a reason I am here?", I asked to change the subject and because I had no idea what he wanted from me. Nonetheless, I got no answer from him. His eyes were fixed on the window and he was watching the scenery outside the train. I frowned, confused by his behaviour. However, as I turned to leave the compartment, he spoke. "I just wanted to check on you... You think I don't notice you avoiding me?"
Now he looked me straight in the eye. I couldn't help blushing a little, so I quickly averted my gaze and looked at the floor. A light chuckle escaped his lips.
"The world doesn't revolve around you. I just have other friends I'd rather spend time with than you," I tried to reply glibly, which went horribly wrong because my voice sounded uncertain.
Malfoy stood up and made the small distance between us disappear with one step. We were separated by only a few inches as he put his hand to my chin and forced me to look him in his grey eyes. "Maybe the whole world doesn't revolve around me... but yours does." His face was so close to mine that our lips almost touched as he spoke and I could feel his hot breath on my skin. Adrenaline shot through my body and I got hot all over. I hardly dared to take a breath. Malfoy, on the other hand, had put on a smug smile and looked deeply into my eyes for a few more seconds before he left the train compartment without saying another word.
When I heard the doors close, I exhaled loudly. I sat down and the tension slowly fell away from me.
What is Draco Malfoy doing to me?
