I sat with Lia and David at breakfast and drank my coffee. I didn't know what to eat yet, because the selection was just way too big. I wondered if it would be possible to get used to it at some point. After looking around some more, I decided to just have a vanilla yogurt and put some fresh strawberries and grapes in it.
'I love Hogwarts...and food,' I thought, grinning to myself.
"What's the matter with you? Why are you so happy?", Lia asked me. She had dark bags under her eyes and was still half asleep.
"I don't know, eating just makes me happy." I laughed and took another sip of my coffee. David looked at me sympathetically as he shoved his toast into his mouth.
"And how were you able to sleep at all last night? Didn't you hear Parkinson snoring?", groaned Lia. Her head was on the table by now, her eyes closed.
"But that's why I drew my curtains. My dad taught my brother and me a spell that you can use to jinx your curtains so that no sound comes in or out. He always says it's one of his best spells and that he wouldn't have survived in Durmstrang without it because everyone snored. It is kind of similiar to the Imperturbable Charm," I explained to Lia, assuring her that I would hex her curtains too when we were back in the girls' dormitory.
She continued to lie on the table and just gave me a thumbs up.
"You'll have to teach me that spell too.", David laughed and I promised to help him too.
After breakfast, we headed off to History of Magic. The subject was taught by Binns and it sounds as boring as it is.
Lia fell asleep in class and was reprimanded by our ghost professor because of it. The lesson seemed to never end and I also had to concentrate on not closing my eyes. I hated subjects that were so theoretical and didn't understand why we had to take it at all.
After the ordeal was over, I checked my schedule to see what I had next. Care of magical creatures with Rubeus Hagrid, it said. Wasn't that the giant hairy man?
Lost in my thoughts, I turned left into a corridor, thinking that was the right way to go.
"Where are you going, Anna?", Lia called after me and I answered her, "Well, to Care of Magical Creatures, where are you running to?"
Lia looked at me like I was making a bad joke but I was totally serious.
"So, you know, I AM going to care for magical creatures. I don't know how you're going to get there if you walk that way.", she laughed and waved me over.
I threw my hands together over my head and sighed. I should rather not have refused the map of the castle when McGonagall offered me one on the first day. Hogwarts was incredibly spacious, though. Beauxbatons and Durmstrang were much smaller. You couldn't get lost there, and since you didn't have every subject with other students, you could just go after a person from your class to end up in the right place.
We had class together with the Gryffindor students and you could clearly see that each house kept to itself as two large groups formed.
As most of the students trickled in one by one, Hagrid apparently noticed that absolutely every one of us had a wide ribbon around our book. But who could blame us? The Monster Book of Monsters was a disaster. Before I managed to forcibly close the book with one of my belts, it had shredded some of my socks that were lying on the floor.
"You have to pet the spines of the books and they'll get all tame.", Hagrid explained to the group. When I tried it, it immediately stopped moving and I could safely open it. It worked on Lia, too. We looked at each other excitedly.
Then I looked at Malfoy, hoping his book would bite his hand. At least a little bit. When he tried and his book calmed down too, he looked surprised. He probably didn't expect Hagrid to tell the truth, the way I heard him ranting about him.
"Really funny, totally witty.", he said sarcastically and I was glad Hagrid didn't hear it. I didn't really know him yet but he seemed really nice. And if I were teaching for the first time, I'd be a little nervous too and wouldn't want to hear something like that.
"Wait a minute everyone, I have an amazing surprise for you.", Hagrid said to the class before disappearing into the forest. I wondered what he was doing there, but he was probably looking for the animal he wanted to introduce us to this time.
"This place is going to the dogs! If I tell my father, that such an oaf is teaching a class!", sneered Malfoy. Once again, he managed to make my blood boil. How could anyone be such an idiot? I was about to say something to him but Harry Potter was quicker than me.
"Just shut up, Malfoy." His voice was surprisingly calm, I couldn't have done it.
"Ooohh.", Malfoy and his followers laughed mockingly. You could tell Harry was getting mad as he walked towards him. Malfoy pretended to be afraid of him but was still laughing.
Suddenly he pointed his fingers in the opposite direction of Harry and shouted, "Dementor! Dementor!" as he stumbled backwards a few steps and his grin disappeared.
I turned as startled as Harry when I realized that Malfoy and his pack had started laughing. They had pulled their hoods off their cloaks over their heads and were making ghostly noises, pretending to be a Dementor.
Harry looked like he wanted to punch him. Before it came to that, I threw a small stick at Malfoy's head. He turned to me with an evil look on his face. "Watch what you're doing, Moore.", he said coldly. "Then stop being such an ass.", I replied to him just as coldly as he was.
Harry looked at me in surprise. He probably wasn't used to someone from Slytherin saying something against Malfoy. Especially not when it was directed against him.
Before Malfoy could talk any more garbage, Hagrid came back with a... hippogriff?
"Tada!", exclaimed Hagrid excitedly. "That's Buckbeak. Isn't he beautiful?"
A/N: How do you like the chapter? I'm trying to stay a little closer to the real story, what do you guys think? :)
Peep the green apple, it might be something I come back to later on ;)
