Duck stood dumbfounded staring at the girl he had once been so close to. He felt his heart break seeing the pure disdain she had for him in her eyes.
Clem tried to ignore the sting on her forehead from her newly acquired cut. The longer she held eye contact with the boy the fainter the pain got until for a moment she could hardly feel it at all.
"Fuck it! Ram the gate!"
The grip on her gun loosened as their eyes met. For a moment she could she the boy she used to know, not the hardened stranger she had seen before. His eyes were soft, brown and brimming with tears but Clem hadn't the faintest clue why.
He was the one that left her for dead, abandoned her and cost Aj his life. It was his fault things turned out the way they did. And just like that her anger was back to brewing, however before she could act on it she saw the headlights of a truck barreling full force toward her.
She screamed diving out of the way just in time as the truck broke through the metal gates. Her body hit the ground rough, sharp rocks piercing at her soft skin. Dust surrounded her, her face slightly scratched from the impact of her fall. She felt rustling from her backpack, sighing in relief to know Cocoa was doing fine after the sudden attack.
The girl stood to her feet her eyes squinted trying to make out familiar figures. All she could see were walkers bringing hell upon the little town she used to call home from time to time. The people she hardly cared for but that didn't stop the sharp pang she felt in her chest watching them get ripped to pieces.
Is this my fault somehow?
The thought crossed her mind. If she had just stayed away none of this would have happened. Bringing Mariana back was a mistake, they should have took their chances on the road instead.
She felt her thoughts begin to consume her. Her mind foggy with different what if scenarios. A tight tug on her chest caused her to grasp for air. It was happening again, just like with Wellington. People were dying, another community fallen all for no particular reason.
She fell to her knees, her eyes wide taking in the damage around her. She could barely register the slight tug of her hand being pulled.
Mariana stood in front of her panicked as she tried desperately to get Clementine to her feet.
"We have to go now Clem!"
Mariana was pulling her she knew that much. The girl could be pulling her straight into a herd of walkers and Clem would be none the wiser. She had tapped out, too stricken about the damage to the community. She feared something like this, thought she had prepared for it but as it was happening before her she realized that was the furthest thing from the truth. This was why she came and went as she pleased, thinking that she wouldn't get attached to the place and the people meant nothing to her. She had barely known them and even with the judging looks they sent her way she had never wanted a single one of them to die, especially not in they way that they were.
