Golden Heart

"You got everything?" Liam looked at Alice, the door of his car opened and ready for Alice to get into the back seat.

They had gotten ready, had grabbed a few ammo packs, put ammo in their guns. Ella had only watched Alice and Liam, too scared to actually touch one of the guns herself. In the end she had to take a small gun for herself though, Liam insisted she always had one by her side. She had taken it very hesitantly, refusing first but in the end deciding to just do what he says. He knew better than all of them, at least he seemed very confident in what he was doing.

Alice looked at Liam, she was sure he was referring to her gun. So she nodded, pulling up her sweatshirt to reveal the gun that was stuck into her pants. The safety was still on to make sure she didn't accidentally shoot herself. He gave her a thumbs up, smiling lightly and she got into the car where Ella was already waiting for her on the passenger seat. Alice's heart was hammering rapidly in her chest, she was scared but also happy they were finally doing something to save Miles.

"Are you still okay with going with us?" Alice asked Ella, trying not to think of all the things that could happen to her. That could happen to them. She needed to stay calm. This was just like the last time, when Miles and her had driven back to town and she had freaked out and told him they'd get caught. Nothing had happened, except maybe that his friend had betrayed them and Miles had gotten caught and...Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to compare what happened that day to this day, considering that was what got Miles in this situation in the first place.

"Yeah , I am," Ella said, bringing her back to reality. She looked at her and smiled lightly. Whatever was going to happen, they were going to stay together and protect each other.

Liam got in the car soon after, checking on Alice in the rearview mirror and giving her a smile. On the outside he seemed as calm as always, as though this was just a regular day for him, shooting people, risking his life. But on the inside he was scared. He remembered the day Brooks had told him they might have to shoot someone. When Miles had lost it and yelled at him because he hadn't been able to pull the trigger. He was scared he wasn't going to be able to do it. He was scared he'd put them all in danger by not being able to pull the trigger. Again. But no one noticed how scared he really was. And maybe it was better that way. They'd just worry even more since he was the one that was supposed to know what he was doing and lead the way. They were depending on him.

"Everyone ready?" He asked as his eyes wandered to Ella who sat stiff in her seat, her shoulders tense as she fumbled with her hands. If they stayed here any longer, she'd just leave the car and go back to the house, she didn't want to have to do this. She only nodded, looking out the window and trying to breathe, inhaling deeply. Alice was a little calmer but her fear of never seeing Miles again was bigger. She knew this was the only way to get him out of there.

"Yes," she said quietly, looking down at her hands in her lap.

"Maybe it's better if you lie down in the back, Alice," Liam looked at her through the rearview mirror again and she looked right back at him, eyes wide open. "No one can see you. If the police or basically anyone sees you we're screwed. You need to get down a little too, Ella."

They both looked at each other and sighed, lying down. Alice could feel her heart throbbing loudly in her chest, pounding in her ears. This was just like the last time she had been in a car, she was worried. More about never seeing Miles again than about her dying. She needed him. She wrapped her arms around her body, curling up into a tiny ball and burying her head in her arms, trying to control her breathing. She heard Liam start the car, the engine roaring loudly as they took off.
