 Golden Heart

Miles eyes wandered from the phone's screen to Alice and back to the screen. Confusion was written all over his face, he had absolutely no clew what was going on. How did Liam know about Jackson, how did he know they were at his house? How had he found out? And why was he telling them to get out of the house because Brooks would get them otherwise? Wasn't he with Brooks?

"Who's Liam?" Alice asked in confusion. But Miles didn't answered. He was too focused on staring at his phone until he finally decided to unlock it. He went right to his messages, ready to text Liam back, ask him what was going on. But before he had a chance to do that Liam called. His phone vibrated in his hand, he flinched lightly as the screen showed Liam's name. His eyes were glued to the glowing phone screen, Alice could see the tenseness in his shoulders. She knew something was terribly wrong about this whole thing.

Miles finally answered the phone. He didn't have a chance to say anything, Liam was faster than him, his voice basically yelling right into Miles' ear, making the young man hold the phone a few inches away from it.

"Don't say a word, Miles," Liam demanded. Miles still had no idea what was going on or why Liam was texting him, calling him. His heart was racing in his chest, the beating almost the only sound in his ears. That and the voice of Liam yelling at him. "Brooks is on his way to get you and that girl, he knows exactly where you are. That guy you're staying with, Jackson, he is working with Brooks."

"Wha-" Miles was about to ask how that would make any sense but Liam cut him off. He was beyond confused and Alice was watching him, her eyes never leaving his face, which made him even more nervous. Whatever was going on, it wasn't good.

"I told you to not speak!" He demanded again, Miles flinching. He turned around, looking into the kitchen where Jackson was standing, leaning against the kitchen counter and staring at his feet as though nothing was wrong. "Brooks told him what happened with your sister a few days ago, he twisted the story a little around to fit his likings though. Jackson told them he had no idea where you were but he was going to help find you. You called him for help and he told you guys to stay at his house, today when you arrived he texted Brooks to let him know where you and the girl are. Brooks called me to come help. He knows what will happen if Brooks gets you and the girl."

"He'd never do that to me," Miles whispered into the phone, making sure Jackson wouldn't hear the conversation he was having. If any of the stuff Liam was saying was actually true they were in a lot of trouble. And if Jackson heard them they were completely screwed. "We've been friends for years, he wouldn't betray me, especially not wish for me to get killed."

"Miles, Brooks told him about your sister. He made up crazy lies, said you killed her on purpose, because you wanted to. He thinks you murdered her, Brooks told me what happened. He trusts me. I know you didn't kill her on purpose...I'm really sorry by the way."

"Get to the point!" Miles whisper-hissed into the phone. He was getting impatient. It wasn't going to take long for Brooks to get here so they had to hurry. And he had to get them out of here before that would happen. He couldn't let anything happen to Alice. He wouldn't be able to forgive himself if she got hurt or even worse, killed.

"I am standing behind the house, in my car. I'm waiting for you guys to come out and I'll get you away from here. Brooks won't expect it, he trusts me. Just get out of that house now."

"How do I know you're telling the truth?" Miles asked after a few seconds of silence. He heard Liam sigh on the other end of the line. He didn't know if he could trust Liam, he was working for Brooks after all. Why would he want to help them all of a sudden? He had been asshole to Miles when they first met, and now he was lying to Brooks, knowing it would get him in danger as well.
