My heart was hammering in my chest as I followed Schlatt through the door. Tubbo, Quackity, Fundy and even George were seated, faces pale as I walked towards the table, taking the vacant seat next to Quackity who looked at me with a nervous smile.
The silence was impenetrable as our forks began to scrape our plates, eating the food in front of us. It was a fine spread, and I couldn't deny, quite delicious. But I couldn't help a feeling of unease.
Still no one spoke as we gradually cleared our plates until I sank into a still pose. Finally, Schlatt spoke.
"There is a traitor sitting at this table." His words were simple, straight to the point. But it made the entire company of guests freeze. We all looked at each other shiftily. We were all traitors. The question is, who was the on that had been found out? Who was the one going to pay?
"A traitor?" Quackity spoke first, voice low and punctuated with shallow breathing.
"Did I fucking stutter? There is a traitor sat here among us, and they will face the consequences of their actions." Quackity squeezed my hand under the table in a friendly manner, noticing my fear. Tubbo's eyes widened as he looked at me, blue eyes flicking back and forth rapidly. Fundy and George simply sat with blank faces, frosting over all their emotions on the subject.
"Schlatt," I dared myself to speak, "How do you know there's a traitor?" I spoke carefully, trying to stop my voice wavering.
"Because I'd have to be an idiot not to. To see them conspiring with traitors. And they know who they are." The President shot me a look of pure venom as he spoke. It was me. He'd found me out.
The others seemed to notice too, as George, Fundy, Tubbo and Quackity's eyes snapped to me, faces paling. I tried to brush off the terror, putting a smile on my face. I'd promised Tommy I'd stay safe. This didn't feel like upholding that promise. Should I have left with him? Ran away back to Wilbur, to him? To what I was familiar with?
Tubbo looked white as a sheet, like he was about to pass out.
"It's okay." I mouthed subtly when Schlatt looked away. He didn't seem to agree with me, hands beginning to shake as he took a sip of his drink. I tugged my fingers through my ruffled, peach hair, trying to distract myself from the pit of dread building in my stomach.
"I suggest a toast." Our eyes snapped to Schlatt. "A standing ovation to the disloyal person who thought they could fool me." I began to tremble as I rose to my feet, clutching my untouched glass of water. I watched my friends stand up, raising their glasses up to a sardonic celebration of my actions.
"To Manberg." Schlatt smirked and took a sip.
"To Manberg." My voice lingered with the other cabinet member's, mingling tones. I drew my glass to my lips, the water tasting bitter. I'd barely swallowed before Schlatt spoke again, the sentence that could end my life.
"To ridding Felicity Juniper from this great country."
My glass fell to the floor shattering as I began to claw at my throat, the delicate skin feeling swollen. I could barely breath. My legs collapsed from under me.
"What the hell have you done?!" Tubbo yelled, dropping to my side. I didn't hear Schlatt's reply, or much else after that. Every muscle ached. It took all my strength to claw my way up the table, shaking all over. I saw the President's lips move to laugh, to mock me. I had one thought.
Find Tommy.
I began to stumble out of the room, still unaware of why I was feeling this way. I heard an unearthly echo of a yell as I half fell down the stairs, of Schlatt's words to me.
"Goodnight, Princess!" It was said with a snicker.
I made it outside, the fresh air providing a little relief. My vision was blurred, swimming with colour, but I could see from the inkling of dark sky it was late. The White House wasn't far from the border of L'manberg. That's the one fact that clicked in my screwed up brain.
I could barely walk as I scrambled through the forest. My throat was getting tighter, restricting my already narrow air flow more. I tried to open my mouth to call out, only to cough deeply, blood splattering onto the ground. My legs failed my, and I slammed to the ground, face pressed into the packed dirt. I tried to crawl forwards, only to be hit with a wall of immeasurable pain.
I used my last gasp of breath to scream.
"TOMMY!"
I felt vibrations of pounding feet through the forest floor as everything keeping me conscious began to fail. I couldn't tell, but I think I heard shouts.
Then, nothing.
