When I finished calling the students to the office. I remembered something about Zahra. She is one of the few students that takes the online classes. I opened her file and dialed the number. A lady with a stern, but kind voice answered the phone.
"Hello, can I help you?"
I leaned back in my chair contemplating on how I was going to ask if I could borrow her daughter and send her on a dangerous trip, "Hello this Mr. Lukas from Smithonia school of Fine Arts. Is this Mrs. Zesiro?"
The lady chuckled, "Hello Mr. Lukas, It's actually Mrs. Thompson. Are you calling for Zahra Zesiro?"
I was very puzzled, "Yes."
Mrs. Thompson yelled in the background then answered, "Zahra is a foreign exchange student, and I am her host parent. What can I do for you?"
I didn't know how to ask so I decided to wing it, "Zahra is one of the highest scorers on the entry exam..."
Mrs. Thompson cut me off, "Yes, I know she's been taking the honors classes for quite some time now."
I sighed and continued, "Yes, that's why me and my vice principal think she would be perfect for this quest with a few other students that did very well on the exams."
Mrs. Thompson didn't respond at first, "What kind of quest is it?"
My eyes darted around the room as I thought of an explanation, "My niece, my vice principal's daughter, went missing last night and we got a note from a messaging bird early this morning from her. The note was written in blood and we're worried. We believe that Zahra and the select other kids are the only ones that can find her and save her."
Mrs. Thompson immediately replied, "Oh, in that case sure Zahra can go. Someone will have to pick her up, because I can't drive all the way to the school I live in Bellcrest Smithonia, and I have my own daughter to care for."
I noticed that a boy and girl walk into my office. I had them take a seat till I was done with my conversation. I continued, "Sure, that will be no problem."
Mrs. Thompson mumbled something that I could barely make out, "Finally, Lisa will be so happy to get her out."
I narrowed my eyes, "What was that?"
Mrs. Thompson nervously laughed, "Oh nothing, I thought you hung up. Good day Mr. Lukas I will have Zahra pack."
Something didn't seem right, but I didn't push it, "Actually Mrs. Thompson we will have everything Zahra will need for the trip. Just have her ready please."
Mrs. Thompson eagerly chuckled, "Alright, she will be ready."
Before I could say another word, I realized she had hung up.
I put the phone on its stand, and looked at the boy and girl in front of me, "Hello, names please."
The boy had short black hair and brown eyes. His hair was messed up as if he had a rough morning. He smiled and pointed at himself, "I'm Xavier Creed, and this is..."
He pointed to the girl, but she cut him off, "Violet Monroe."
She had black hair that was neatly pulled back into a bun, and blue eyes.
I smiled humbly at the both of them, "Thank you for coming so quickly."
I patiently waited for Samuel and Saige to come in, but they never did. Violet whispered something to Xavier and he raised his hand. Noticing his hand I called on him.
He exchanged looks with Violet, "Isn't Saige, Samuel and whoever this Zahra person is supposed to be here, as well."
My expression hardened, "Yes, well, Zahra takes the online classes, but Saige and Samuel dorm here. Have you seen them?"
Xavier's eyes darted to me than back to Violet as he spoke, "We didn't see them in class today."
I sighed and started looking through my security footage. Everything was clear, but someone turned off the security camera for the elevator. I turned it back on and solved our little mystery,
"They are stuck in the elevator."
Xavier and Violet both stood up.
Violet smiled, "Turn off the alarm system so they can rewire the elevator."
That wasn't a bad plan, but it's too risky if the alarm system is off I won't know if a kid is trying to do something stupid. The alarm goes off at least ten times a day. Then either Jerry or I have to go bust the little delinquent and send them to detention.
Xavier had another idea, "Or don't turn off the alarms, but tell them it's alright, and they won't get into trouble if they do rewire it."
I liked that idea, and that's what scares me is that these kids can outsmart me without even trying, "Good idea kid."
I grabbed the P. A. Systems microphone and turned it on, "Attention, Attention, Saige and Samuel, we know you're in the elevator and you have my direct permission to rewire the elevator and get to my office immediately. You are not in trouble."
Violet high fived Xavier. Her voice is both gentle and authoritative, "Now we just have to hope it works."
Xavier sat down, "It will Saige and Samuel are the smartest kids in school."
