"I wonder what Zahra's going to be like?" I thought out loud.
Saige must've heard me, because she answered me, "She's a foreign exchange student."
That puzzled me, "What is that supposed to mean?"
Saige sighed, "It means she's probably going to be a know it all. I mean most kids are."
I continued clearing the table, "Saige, can you start the dishes."
She huffed but nodded reluctantly then walked to the sink.
I looked out the window of the plane. It was so dark that I couldn't see anything, but the stars. I leaned against the window seal and sighed. I wondered what my parents were doing at this very moment. Were they up worrying about me? Were they fast sleep from worrying too much? Or are they stress free, because they trust me, and they trust I will come home safe and sound. I looked to my right and seen Saige. A tear went down her cheek she had a phone in her hand. She stared at it as if she wanted to call someone. I didn't know what to say to her, and I was tempted to wake her brother up to make sure she's alright but I decided against it. She whispered something to herself that I couldn't make out.
I frowned, "What's wrong?"
She looked up to me tears streamed out of her eyes and down her cheek. They dripped off her cheek onto the window seal, "Sam, called my parents earlier." She paused then continued her voice was quiet and meek, "They actually had time to talk to him, but whenever I call them, they always tell me they have to go and they will call me later. They never call me back."
Saige was quiet for a while, and I thought of ways to cheer her up, but I didn't know how. My parents aren't in the Smithonian army they are always home.
I looked at her and asked, "Why don't you talk to Sam?"
She shook her head, "I don't know. Maybe because he tries to be strong, and I don't want to shatter his confidence. Father told him to stay strong for me, but he doesn't have to be. Sam is just trying to please father."
With that Saige pointed to her dorm and told me she was going to bed.
I was the last one up on the plane, and I'm not going to lie it's a little spooky. Whenever I took a step it creaked. It probably has always been there, but with everybody talking you couldn't hear it.
I walked to my dorm and crawled into bed. I stared at the ceiling for the longest time before I fell asleep.
"Knock, Knock!" I opened the door to find Xavier.
I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and my expression hardened, "What?"
He smirked, "How long did you stay up last night? We are in Bellcrest I made breakfast, but we already ate."
He handed me a Peanut Butter Jelly sandwich.
I rubbed my eyes again to make sure I was seeing straight, "Thanks for the sandwich."
Xavier smirked again, "You're welcome, now eat it and let's go."
I inhaled the sandwich and started to get ready for the trip. I looked out my dorm window. Were in the middle of the forest? I thought to myself. I immediately felt like I was forgetting something then it hit me.
I ran out of my dorm in a panic, "Xavier! Have you found any of our special weapons?"
Xavier turned around.
His eyes widened, "No, everyone start looking! We can't go anywhere without those!"
The school gives each child combat training that would work best for them. Me and Xavier both have a bow an arrow, Saige has a metal staff, I don't know what Zahra has, but Samuel is a black belt in karate. The school is convinced that if people find out we are this talented, they will kidnap us and make us do terrible things with our talents. So in order to defend ourselves we must have weapons. Mr. Lukas said the plane has everything we need so our special weapons have to be here, somewhere.
Samuel yelled from across the room, "I found them! They are in a secret vault, but who does the sword belong to?"
I immediately thought of Zahra as I walked over to Sam. He handed me and Xavier our bows and a bunch of arrows. He grabbed the metal staff and handed it to Saige. She squealed as she took it and started swinging it around.
Samuel put something in his pocket and grabbed Zahra's sword, "We will give this to Zahra when we get to her house, alright."
Everyone agreed as we walked off the plane. Xavier locked it and we all agreed that Xavier will be the leader, and I will be the co-leader of the quest. It took about five minutes to convince Saige and get her on the same page, but she eventually gave in to the plan.
The trees shielded the sunlight from us pretty well, but they didn't do anything for the heat. It must be at least 80 to 90 degrees outside. There was no grass under our feet just a dirt road. Thankfully Saige had the plane automatically park as close as we could get to Zahra's house without disobeying Mr. Lukas's rule.
We walked for about a half hour, and sweat started to drip down my face. I took the rubber band off of my wrist and pulled my hair back into a ponytail. Samuel was the only one not carrying a weapon (That we know of. I did see him put something into his pocket.) so we had him carry the bag full of water bottles.
Xavier must have read my mind, "Sam, can you hand everyone water. Keep hydrated guys I don't need anyone to get heat stroke."
We all gulped down the water as we walked.
All the green started to hurt my eyes, but it was beautiful. The sun shined through the tips of the trees and reflected on the ground. As we approached some bushes they started moving, and that scared me a little because there was no wind whatsoever. I equipped my bow and nocked an arrow.
Xavier followed my lead, but asked, "Violet what wrong?"
I kept my eyes on the bush, "The bush is moving." I whispered.
Xavier put his bow away, "It's fine, Violet, come on. It's hot and your eyes may be playing tricks on you." He gently pushed down my bow, "It's alright."
I could have sworn I seen it move, but maybe Xavier is right and the heat is just getting to me. I cautiously walked past the bush keeping my eyes pierced.
The heat seemed to be getting worse, but I tried not to let it affect me.
I drank the rest of my water, "Xavier, maybe we should all take a break."
Saige sighed and sat on a log, "My makeup is running!" She sighed.
I tried to think of what to say, but decided to say nothing as I sat down on a big rock, and admired the scenery for a few minutes. A little stream flowed behind us, and the sound of it was relaxing. Until Samuel started ranting about how we only have a certain amount of time, and we can't afford to waste any of it. His face was losing its color and his hair was soaked in sweat. Saige got up her face was beat red, "See how horribly makeup deprived and red Violets face is? What about Xavier's? And let's not pretend you don't see my poor mascara running? Like honestly that's a crisis in itself. That's because it's hot, and we have been walking for a while. We need this break or we are no good to Phoebe or to our hygiene."
That seemed to make him lay off a little, and for once I am thankful that Saige is so brutally honest even if it was her own brother and aimed a little to much towards her makeup.
I decided to change the subject, "How much longer till we reach Zahra's house?" I wiped the sweat off my forehead.
Samuel answered, "About another hour or so."
I sighed and leaned back on the rock. I had to fight the urge to close my eyes and sleep. Luckily the sound of Saige's continuous complaints helped.
