I watched Hadley's chest rise and fall. A constant rhythm reassuring me that she was still here. She was still breathing. Those creeps. My anger flared as I remembered them. If I could read minds, they would all be dead.

I'd never felt fury like that before. We were all waiting at the front of the building for her to get done in the bathroom when the wind whipped around us. An unnatural wind. I knew it was Hadley. I sensed her power and the urgency of the wind. My power rushed through me instantly, and I was gone.

Turning the corner of that building, my blood ran cold. Those bastards had cornered her. They tried to hurt her. Two were on the ground. I watched with satisfaction as she kicked one of them again. I didn't even think before I was there. In between her and the others. They would have to go through me to get to her. They deserved so much worse than what I gave them.

Coming back to the present, I was glad she was resting now. I was hoping with me holding her, she wouldn't have any nightmares. I didn't know if those creeps would trigger anything subconsciously. She seemed thrilled with herself, but I was still worried.

She hadn't given us a lot of details about her past, but there had been enough hints to know it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. The flashback she had in the yard that day came to mind. The flashback I triggered. She should never had gone through anything that could cause flashbacks like that.

She should have been spoiled and cared for her entire life. She deserved so much more than what she had been given. Now it was our job to make sure she got everything she wanted and needed. It was our job to make sure she was safe. And even though there were seven of us, we were already failing her.

Staring at her beautiful face, I vowed that this would never happen again. Creeps like that wouldn't get within twenty feet of her. We would do better. I would do better. She deserved the best, and that was what she would get. We couldn't continue to let her be hurt like this.

She was about to shake up our entire world, and we would stay by her side no matter what. I couldn't wait to watch her follow this path she was on. We hadn't discussed what lay ahead of us, but my chosen brothers and I were all aware of the possibility. She was too powerful not to consider it.

I reluctantly looked away from her and met Kent's gaze in the rear-view mirror. He gave me a subtle nod that let me know he was thinking the same thing. We would change and be the Kustos that she deserved.

She slept for most of the trip. We were approaching the outer wards when she began to stir. Slowly, she straightened, stretching her arms above her head. She yawned, covering it with her hand.

"Where are we?" she asked, glancing out the window. I followed her gaze and tried to see it as she did. The forest whipped past us. This two-lane road appeared to be in the middle of nowhere.

"We're here," I told her, catching sight of the familiar line of the ward. Her eyes widened.

"We are?"

Kent smiled and nodded, backing up my words. He slowed the vehicle, displaying his Kustos symbol to the hidden sentries. We passed easily through the ward and past the illusion that kept the city safe.

The moment we were through, the city appeared around us in a sprawling metropolis. Hadley gasped and moved closer to the window. I held back a sigh at the sight of the familiar city. There were a lot of memories here that I had tried my best to forget. Pushing that down, I smiled at Hadley when she turned back to me with those wide eyes.

"Welcome to Domu."
