"What?" The girl peered up at Giovanna, standing up straighter, to be level with Giovanna.
Giovanna smiled softly, doing her best to not over-do it. If she was honest, Giovanna was never the best at making friends. Not really. Every sport she joined, she found herself struggling to connect with her teammates. It wasn't that she didn't try, but something about the way she approached others always felt off. They weren't really there for friendship and peace in camp Hachiko, where she spent most of her summers as a child.
Which meant any friend she had from school, they were quickly forgotten during the summer.
When she joined her team in Tokyo, it was more of a professional relationship. She got along with them fine, but it was always clear that their bond was rooted in work rather than personal connection. And that was fine, for the most part. She knew she was there for her skill, not because they necessarily enjoyed her company. She had always assumed that was just how things were, but now, she was hoping that things could be different this time.
"Giovanna, my name." She rocked on her heels, lowering her hand.
Tory slung her bag over her shoulder, permenant scowl on her lips. "Yeah, I heard."
Tory's curt response didn't surprise her, but it stung nonetheless. Giovanna maintained her warm smile, determined not to let Tory's attitude dampen her spirits. "Tory, right? Sensei Kreese mentioned you," she inhaled, "but I wanted to introduce myself anyway."
Tory gave a noncommittal grunt, her expression unreadable. Giovanna couldn't tell if it was indifference or hostility, but she wasn't ready to give up.
Tory finally spoke, her voice laced with a hint of sarcasm. "Yeah, I know who you are. The 'prodigy' from Tokyo, right? Sensei Silvers little legacy, here to shake things up." Tory's tone was biting, but Giovanna refused to back down.
She met Tory's gaze with steady confidence, her smile unwavering. "I'm not here to replace anyone," she replied calmly. "I'm here to help you win. You do want to win, don't you?"
Giovanna's calm demeanor and unyielding determination seemed to catch Tory off guard. For a moment, the tension in the air shifted, and Tory's expression softened, if only slightly. It was clear that Giovanna's presence was going to challenge the dynamics of the dojo, but perhaps not in the way Tory had initially expected. Tory's hesitation lingered, but Giovanna's words had struck a chord.
The tension eased slightly as Tory nodded, her voice low but resolute. "Yeah, I want to win. Just don't expect me to trust you yet."
Tory's words hung in the air, a mix of defiance and reluctant acceptance. Giovanna's smile widened slightly, unbothered by the challenge.
"Trust takes time," Giovanna replied, her tone light yet confident. "But I'm pretty good at earning it, just like I'm good at winning. Let's see which I accomplish first."
A group of Cobra Kai's joined them, cocky smirks on their lips.
One of them, a tall boy with a swagger in his step, looked Giovanna up and down before smirking. "So, you think you can just waltz in and make us champs? We've been doing fine without you, Tokyo." he taunted, crossing his arms defiantly.
Her eyes flickered around the group, landing on one boy who leaned against the wall, watching from a distance. Unlike the others, he didn't join in the taunts, but his silence felt heavier than their words. His gaze was intense yet inscrutable, a mix of curiosity and skepticism that seemed to probe beneath the surface. There was something about his eyes, sharp and calculating, that suggested he was assessing her potential as much as her demeanor.
