"Wanna make out?"
A arm slithered around her shoulder, but the boy kept himself at a distance. Giovanna raised her eyebrows, peering up at the random boy. He smelt of beer and chlorine. He stood in only his dress pants, water dripping off his hair. He wasn't bad looking, with tousled dark hair that clung to his forehead and a mischievous glint in his eyes. His broad shoulders and confident stance suggested he was used to getting his way.
Giovanna shook her head, "not drunk enough for that yet, come find me in ten minutes."
He flashed a smile, pointing at her as he joined his group of friends. "She didn't say no!" He cheered.
Gia shook her head, "sorry!" She yelped as her shoulder knocked into someone, spinning around to come face to face with Miguel.
The music thumped loudly, vibrating through the walls and floor, while colorful lights flickered, casting playful shadows across the room. Laughter and lively chatter filled the air, mixing with the clinking of glasses and the occasional splash from the pool. The scent of sweat and alcohol was thick in the air, mingling with the faint scent of chlorine. Giovanna wasn't exactly sure whos house she was at, and seriously considered joining Moon when her friend decided she was too tired to party.
Leo and Tory convinced Gia to come, claiming that she wasn't getting the full prom experience without the afterparty. She scanned the room, recognizing a few faces but not enough to feel comfortable. Miguel pursed his lips, muttering an apology.
She shifted uncomfortably, and for the first time she didn't have much to say. She and Miguel didn't have any bad blood, and she's pretty sure they've never actually spoken before. She glanced around again, hoping to find someone familiar to talk to. The music seemed to grow louder, making it harder to think. Miguel gave her a small, awkward smile.
She smiled. "Um... you look great!" she settled on, the words coming out a little rushed before trailing off.
Miguel blinked, clearly caught off guard. "Oh, uh... thanks," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "You too." The compliment hung in the air for a second longer than it should have.
Gia shifted her weight, glancing past him toward the kitchen where people were gathered around the counter. The music from the living room pulsed through the walls, laughter and shouting blending with the beat.
For someone who could usually talk her way through anything, her mind felt oddly blank.
Miguel seemed to be having the same problem. He cleared his throat. "So... prom was... good?" he tried.
Gia huffed a small laugh. "Yeah," she said. "Loud."
"That checks out." Another beat of silence.
They both looked around the room at the same time, like two people who had accidentally been paired for a group project and didn't quite know how to start.
Gia tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I don't think we've actually met," she said.
Miguel shook his head. "No, I don't think so."
"I'm Gia."
"I know," he said quickly. "I mean, not in a creepy way. Just... people talk."
Gia raised an eyebrow. "That's slightly creepy."
Miguel winced. "Yeah, that came out wrong."
Gia let out a small laugh, the tension in her shoulders loosening just a little. "No, I got what you meant," she said.
