Public school smelled like disinfectant mixed with the faint odor of sweat and cafeteria food. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a harsh glare that made the hallways feel unwelcoming.
Wonderful.
Giovanna stood in the middle of an empty hallway, staring down at the schedule the counselor provided. She felt a mix of anticipation and dread as she tried to make sense of the jumbled class names and room numbers. She swallowed, forcing her feet to move.
Giovanna hadn't been in a real, public school in years. Three, if she was being exact. She was in her freshman year when she was accepted to join the Black Belt Academy's karate team. Rather than being stuck in the confines of a classroom, she had spent her days training, competing, and traveling.
To put it simply, Giovanna had no idea what she was doing.
She was hyper aware of their first period already starting, so she was late. God, Mr. Tanaka would never let her hear the end of it if he knew. If she were late to anything during camp, she would have to run laps until she could barely stand. She quickened her pace, determined not to let her first day back in school start with a reprimand.
She rounds the corner, smacking straight into a chest.
She stumbled back, her hands flying up to steady herself. The person she had collided with was tall and solid, and for a moment, she froze, her face heating with embarrassment. "Hey!" He nearly yelled, scowling.
Giovanna wanted to crawl into a hole and die. "I'm so sorry! I wasn't watching where I was going," she blurted out, her words tumbling over each other in her haste. "It's my first day back, and I'm already late, and I just got a little lost trying to find my class. I didn't mean to run into you, really!"
She paused, finally taking notice of his spiked up hair with colored tips. "Cool hair!"
He raised an eyebrow, his scowl softening into a smirk. "Yeah, thanks," he muttered, running a hand over his Mohawk. "Where are you headed?" He asks, biting out the words as if he had something not so nice to say.
Giovanna smiles, breathing in relief. "204." She says, peering down at her paper.
The boy nods, his expression softening slightly. "I'll show you," he said, gesturing for her to follow. "It's on my way." Giovanna felt a wave of gratitude as she fell into step beside him, relieved to have someone guide her through the unfamiliar hallways.
"I'm Gia, by the way." She says softly, "Hawk."
Her eyebrows shoot up, "Oh. I'm sorry." She frowns.
"It's just a nickname," he explained, his tone lightening. "Most people call me that."
Gia nodded, feeling a little less flustered. "Did you get that before or after the hair?" She asks, following him through the halls.
He shrugs, "after the hair, before the tattoo."
She perks up. "Can I see?"
He smirks, winking in her direction. "Take me out to dinner before I take my shirt off for you."
She blushed, looking away as she tried to hide her embarrassment. "Oh! I was just curious," Gia stammered, her cheeks still warm. "I didn't mean to—"
"Relax," Hawk interrupted, his smirk softening into a grin. "I'm just messing with you." He glanced over his shoulder, his pace steady. "But seriously, dinner first."
