The second time she met the Doctor was at his funeral.

They all walked inside the smoke-covered room, walking straight towards the coffin. "Now then. Smith and Jones." Inside, the two women were hugging each other, both sighing in relief when they saw their friends and family above them. Then the sound turned into laughter. "The coffin was the trap. The coffin was the solution. That's so neat, I could write a thesis. Well, come on then, you two. Out you get."

Everyone burst into laughter, and it seemed that it had been a rather nice end to the mess of a day.

They had all climbed into the Tardis after grabbing their things, and Jane was more than delighted to be in it and flying once more. The interior had changed since the last time she had seen it, and when she thought about it more - the exterior had too. It was still lit in orange, but everything else, the console included was different.

The Doctor was leaning against the console, screwdriver up in hand, rather pleased he had gotten it back. Sarah Jane, Jo, and Jane were still all in the time machine - all three struggling to leave.

"Still the same old Tardis. It doesn't matter what's changed, it still smells the same." Jo took a deep breath in, eyes closing before they snapped open once more. "Nope! I've got to say goodbye, or else I'd stay with you forever. Besides, I probably couldn't keep up anymore." A chuckle came from both of the older women, glancing towards the time lord. "Get you into trouble with the Time Lords."

" Hmm. Yeah, I'd probably better go. You know me, stuff to do." He cleared his throat, pushing himself off the console, and pretended to be rather busy. Jane sensed that something had changed since the two older women really knew him.

"It's daft, though, because we were both saying, we had this theory that if you ever died, we'd feel it, somehow we'd just know. But that's just silly, isn't it?"

" I don't know. Maybe not. Because between you and me, if that day ever comes. I think the whole universe might just shiver." He startled them both after he finished his words, causing the two older women to burst into laughter.

Jo was wrapped in a hug from the Time Lord, and Sarah Jane was too. Both women left the Tardis, leaving the younger Smith there.

"Doctor, am I ever coming with you?" A sigh passed through her lips, sonic lipstick having returned to her pocket a while ago now. Fingertips fiddled with the end of her jumper, sparing a quick glance towards the man opposite now.

"I hope so." The Doctor said, taking a few strides so he was standing in front of the woman. It was strange because despite only meeting him twice, Jane had known him her whole life - and for her whole life, she had fallen for him; in more ways than one.

"I'll be waiting, Doctor."

Jane stepped out of the Tardis, eyes closed as she heard the noise of it dematerialising once more. She always waited, just in case. Her mother was waiting, ready to wrap her daughter in a big hug.

"I love you, Mum." Words were muffled against her hair, as the women embraced each other for a moment. Everyone else had gone downstairs, and Jo and her grandson had to leave rather quickly to get back on their travels.

Sarah Jane excused herself so that she could go and say goodbye, but Jane couldn't bring herself to say goodbye to anyone. The young woman sat upon the stairs in the attic - staring at the computer opposite her.

Fingers drummed against her knee, wondering just when the next time she saw the Doctor was going to be. It could be months... years... and Jane was willing to wait all the time in the world for him.

And waited she did. It had been several months, every day filled with another adventure - until her mother's death. Jane knew it was coming - Luke, Skye, and herself all had, she had been rather ill and just couldn't fight a losing battle anymore.

The woman was standing at her mother's grave, a black umbrella in her hand as rain poured down from the sky. Her mum. Her everything. Was just gone. But she had sworn, that between herself and her siblings - they were going to continue her legacy. Jane had become a journalist, just like her mother, and she was almost a spitting image of her now.

It was that day, that she would hear that familiar wheezing noise, the groaning, and the eventual appearance of a blue box. Her green hues were squeezed shut, convinced she was just hearing it because she needed hope right then.

A hand on her shoulder made her jump, turning her head up to see the bow-tie-wearing mad man. The hand moved to her waist and the Time Lord wrapped her in a hug. "I'm so sorry, Janey."

The words made her break, sobbing into his shoulder. He had taken the umbrella from her, holding it in a hand that wasn't around the young woman. "It's alright. I've got you." The Doctor's words made her feel like it was true, that she was safe for once - though her standard for that was very different compared to others.

What she hadn't known at that moment, was that the Doctor had just lost someone too. And he was in need of her as much as she needed him.

"I think it's time for you to come with me."

It had taken the woman a moment to get over the shock of having the man back in her life, sitting upon the steps of the orange-lit Tardis. Fingers brushed over her cheeks to try and rid them of the dried-up tears. Next to her, sat the Time Lord, his arm wrapped around the woman, his head resting on top of hers.

Her gaze turned to him, looking into his old eyes - and she had started to get very good at reading into him. But she didn't say anything, she didn't feel as if she needed to - and neither did he. They both sat in a comfortable silence with each other.

They both needed each other at that moment, they had both lost people that had meant the world to them. But her mother had told her a few things before her untimely death that would stay with her forever.

The Doctor should never be alone.
