I was being shaken awake, although I was not drenched in sweat or surrounded by my worried dorm-mates. No, it was simply Tamara, fully dressed with her scarf pinned neatly in place, shaking me awake minutes before midnight. Her sharp brown eyes held no sign of sleep and I wondered if she'd even tried to get in a few hours before we had to be on our way to Astronomy.
I sat up, hoping that she'd stop shaking me if she knew there was very little chance that I could fall back asleep. I was right, and within my first stretch, she was hovering over Heather who was trying to push her away. I shook my head as I watched the two struggle against one another. Heather had managed to wiggle out of Tamara's grasp, and was now hiding underneath the blankets in hope that she'd just leave her there.
This was not the case.
Tamara made her way down to the end of Heather's bed and pulled the patchwork quilt straight off of her bed and tossing it onto the floor. She crossed her arms over her lean chest and stared down at Heather who was now laid on her back, glaring up at her as well as she could through the groggy look on her mask-covered face.
"You need to get up, we have class in a few minutes," Tamara said, turning to deal with Colleen and Robin who were still tucked gently under the heavy blanket of sleep.
"Who decided that we should have class at midnight," Heather asked, rolling over to plant her face in the pillow.
"Heather, you can't see the stars during the day," I said, barely registering her question as I rubbed my eyes.
"It gets dark before midnight..." Heather yawned, "Like we could have done this right after dinner."
She did have a point. I didn't understand why we had to be up and running at midnight just to stare at some stars. I never paid all that much attention in Astronomy as it never really seemed like something that could help me in any way, not to mention I found it overwhelmingly boring. You look up at some stars and the teacher tells you what constellations they were apart of and blah blah blah.
I'd rather sit through History of Magic than this, I mean, at least there were desk in Professor Binns's class. I had to either sit or stand for this stupid class, and I had a feeling like this class would end in me falling asleep on the cold stone floor.
I looked over at the beds across the room from me, Robin now simply staring up at the ceiling as she tried to will herself out of bed, or maybe just because she wasn't quite sure of where she was quite yet. I could see Tamara looking over at her, making sure another good shake wasn't necessary to keep her from falling back to sleep before turning to Colleen. Her hand hadn't even reached Colleen's shoulder yet when she spoke up.
"Mara, if you shake me, I swear to Merlin, I'll hex you."
Tamara's hand slowly pulled back from the girl and even though I could tell that she wasn't intimidated by Colleen as much as she probably should be, she made her way over to her own bed instead of messing with Colleen.
Tamara pulled on her robes over the rest of her uniform as I slowly made my way out of bed. I pulled a scrunchie from beside my bed, pulling my hair back away from my face, not really caring if I missed a few curls here and there. I pulled my robes with my house crest on over my pyjamas, really more so draping it over my shoulders instead of pulling my arm out of the sling and forcing it through the sleeve, again not caring that I wasn't putting on anything else from my uniform. I doubted that there would be a lot of students there dressed in full uniform anyway.
"Juniper, you are a genius," Heather said in awe and she pulled the few stray strands of hair that had fallen out of her curlers out of her face as she finally sat up in bed.
