You tried to resist the urge to look at the clock once more as you hugged the blanket tighter around yourself and squeezed your eyes shut. It's well after two in the morning now and you're growing restless and impatient the longer you lay awake.
Just a couple of hours ago, a little before midnight, your girlfriend was falling asleep on your lap and you agreed to call it a night. At the time, you were pretty tired yourself.
But you somehow got a second wind and with a busy day ahead tomorrow and an early morning, you were starting to think you'd be wide awake and have no choice but to muddle through the day on no sleep.
You continue to toss and turn and through it all, Liz has only stirred on occasion but thankfully stayed asleep.
You've switched from one side to the other, kicked off the blanket only to bring it back up to your shoulders only a few minutes later, and you keep your eyes closed for minutes at a time only to open them again when you grow antsy.
You sat up and stretched your arms over your head. You tried not to, but soon caved in looking at the time and you groaned when you saw it was two-forty four in the morning.
Deciding that you couldn't stand another minute wide awake and restless in bed, you pushed the blankets away again and swung your legs over the bed.
You planned on going downstairs for some water and maybe even a film or two since you couldn't sleep. But when you were about to leave the bed, a hand reached out and took ahold of yours to keep you from leaving.
"Where do you think you're going at," Liz paused, peeking one eye open to look at the clock before closing it again. "Almost three in the morning."
"Downstairs. I can't sleep and there's no need for us both to be wide awake when you have the chance to get some sleep. Don't worry, I'll be just fine and I'll only be downstairs." You said and leaned in to kiss her forehead, only for her to put her arms around you and pull you on top of her.
"Liz," you whined. "Baby, let go."
"No." She said, tightening her grip on you as you squirmed. "Stop wiggling, I'm not letting you leave this bed until morning."
"But I can't sleep." You groaned. "And I'm getting anxious just laying here as time passes by. I know you're tired so let me go and I won't worry about disturbing you."
"Not happening." She mumbled. "Lay back down."
You sighed heavily but did as she said. Your back hit the mattress and she moved to lay a kiss to the crown of your head.
"You stay here. Don't go anywhere. I'll be right back."
You crossed your arms over your chest but obliged. You waited a few minutes for her to return, spending them by rolling around restlessly in bed. She chuckled as she came back into the bedroom with a warm drink just for you in her hand.
"Drink this, my love. Might help you sleep."
You brought it to your lips, taking slow sips since it was hot. But you recognized it as chamomille tea. A natural remedy for many things, including insomnia, you only hoped that it'd lull you to sleep sooner or later.
"At this point, I'm only gonna get four and a half hours of sleep. Probably less than that since I'm not asleep yet." You mumbled as you look back at the clock, finding that it was three in the morning now.
"Stop overthinking. Just relax."
"It's hard to do that when I have a busy day ahead and I need sleep." You whined and Liz brought you into her arms afterward.
"And you will. You'll get tired sooner or later. Just give it a little time. Stop overthinking it. You'll get tired soon." She promised and started to rub small circles on your back. "In the meantime, do you want to watch your favorite show?"
"Babe, you're sleepy. Don't turn on the tv or keep yourself awake just for me."
"Well, you're just gonna have to deal with it because I'm doing both of those things." She said as she grabbed the remote and turned on the tv. "And I'm not falling asleep again until you do. So relax and let all of your worries slip away as we cuddle and watch this. Just focus on me."
Her voice was soft, like her kisses to the top of your head were. Her heartbeat was steady as you listened to it while laying your head over her chest. Your worries started to fade as you began to relax in her embrace and found yourself chuckling along to the show before your eyes grew heavy.
You closed them and Liz watched you drift off to sleep. She whispered softly in your ear, telling you to have sweet dreams and that she loves you so much. But you couldn't reply, because you were asleep before you knew it.
"I told you that you'd fall asleep sooner or later." She giggled and kissed your head. "Sleep tight, baby. I love you."
And with that, she closed her eyes and started to fall back asleep, content with knowing you were doing the same in her arms now.
