I wake up to a light tapping on my door, stirring as I wake up. I look over, seeing Allison at my door, leaning against the white door frame. I look over at her, confused.
"Hey, wake up, there's something you need to see." She says, walking out, letting me get dressed. She sounded... sad? I quickly get dressed, coming out at the time as Luther. We both follow her, as her head hangs low. Me and Luther look at each other, confused. We walk down the stairs, seeing Mom sitting there in her usual spot with all the paintings, but she was dead eyed, not moving, not greeting us. I stare in shock as Luther sits down, looking at her lifeless face. Mom was dead now too. Shit.
"The two guys last night, the ones with the masks... they did this to her." Allison says sadly, as I see her wrist is open, her wiring cut. "It has to do with Five somehow. I mean, they were looking for him." She says, and I turn my attention to her.
"Wait, so I almost died because some assholes were looking for that dick? AGH!" I yell out, running my hands through my hair. "Sonofabitch has some explaining to do."
"I know I was arguing to turn Grace off, but it doesn't make seeing her like this any easier." Luther says, looking away from her. I wanted to yell at him, but I had no words. Mom was dead... because some assholes were looking for Five? It didn't make sense. Why would they want Five?
"Poor Diego. I mean this is going to be so hard on him." Allison says, as Luther stands up, and I lean against the wall.
"Yeah, it's hard on all of us." Luther says quietly, as he starts to walk away. I walk away too, going downstairs. What was there to say? I didn't have a clue. Mom was gone, right after Dad. Now I legit had no one. I sigh, just walking around the house, moaping in grief, remembering all the good times we had with Mom. Like Diego said, she's advanced past what Dad made her, she was our Mom. I go down to the kitchen, looking at the oven, smiling.
"Now I need the butter, Aleya, would you get me the butter?" Mom says, as I open the fridge with my powers, getting the butter out and passing it her way. "Thank you Aleya! Great job!" She says, smiling as usual at me. Sundays were the days Mom taught me how to bake and cook, since I loved it so much.
"How much Mom?" I ask, grabbing the measuring cups out of the cupboard.
"1/3 cup." She says, as I cut the piece off, accidentally nicking my finger as I do so. I jerk my hand back, watching as the blood trickles. "Aleya!" She says, walking over to the first aid kit to get a bandaid and a wipe. She wipes my finger off, the stinging making me wince. She puts the bandaid on, looking up at me. "You should let me cut things, or if you are cutting, claw your fingers, like this, see?" She says, inching her fingers towards her palm. "It makes it so if you do cut your finger, you don't cut the tip right off your finger." She says, smiling at me. "Now, butter."
I smile at the fond memories of Mom teaching me how to cook everything I needed to know how to cook, all my tips I needed and everything. I learned more from cooking shows and books about flavour profiles and more, but the basics I learned from her, and where my love for cooking started. I go back upstairs, sadly remembering Mom's death. I past by Five's room, hearing rummaging and Pogo talking. I open the door, peering in as Luther rummages through Five's things.
"Yeah, I know but we need to warn him. He doesn't even know we were being attacked. He doesn't know they're looking for him, he doesn't know-" Luther says to Pogo, turning around to see me. "Aleya." He says, as I stare at him confused. He gets up, coming towards me. "You gotta know where Five is, he must've told you something." He says, and I open my mouth, trying to say something.
"I haven't seen him since the day he came back, unfortunately. I have just as much as an idea as you do." I say softly, him turning back around to look through his things as I sit in silence.
"What are you doing here?" Diego says, walking in, staring at Luther. I glup in silence, sighing out of my nose as I sit on the bed. Luther throws the stuff he was looking for back in the desk, standing up.
"Uh... Do you know about Mom?" Luther says, calm in tone.
"Well, it looks like you got what you wanted, one way or another, right?" Diego says, looking off behind him at the last part. Luther looks at me and Pogo, none of us do anything.
"Wanna tell me what you're doing here?" Luther says, looking back at the desk.
"Looking for Five." Diego says, standing by the door.
"Oh, let me guess, you're gonna save the day." Luther spits back.
"That's what I do. Asshole." Diego says, starting to leave.
"Really? Last time I checked, you mopped floors." Luther says, causing Diego to turn back around, as me and Pogo stare at Diego.
"And what do you do? Sit on the moon, for four years, waiting for orders?" Diego says, stepping towards Luther, Luther clearly getting pissed, as they both get closer to each other, and I sigh.
"Boys, this won't help us find Five." Pogo says, but gets ultimately ignored.
"Keep on being a loyal soldier after everything our father did to you." Diego says, raising his eyebrows.
"What? You mean save my life?" Luther fumes back, as I close my eyes in annoyance.
"No, I mean.. turn you into a monster." Diego says, as I scoff.
"Diego too far. Cut it out." I say, getting ignored too. Damnit, nothing could stop these assholes from fighting. Luther punches a hole in Five's wardrobe, his fist going straight through it, and nearly scaring me to death. Pogo shakes his head, groaning in annoyance as the boys have a stare off.
"Can't hide it anymore, champ." Diego taunts, smiling. Luther pulls his fist out of the wardrobe.
"He had a difficult decision to make, and he made it." Luther says quietly, as Diego scoffs silently.
"Grow up, Luther. We're not 13 anymore." Diego says back, as I scoff, rolling my eyes. Says you.
"That's what leaders do, by the way." Luther says back to his last comment, as I shake my head. It was like a car crash, you know you shouldn't look, but it was hard to look away.
"He sent you on that mission all alone. Almost got you killed." Diego says.
"Yeah, well at least he was there. Where were you? You and everyone else in this family? You walked out." Luther says, trying to argue his point home.
"And thank Christ I did! Or else I would've ended up just like you." Diego points at him, spitting his words like venom. "Let me ask you a question. When you watch one of these nature shows.." Diego goes closer to him.
"Diego please!" Pogo says, as I watch in disbelief.
"...does it turn you on?" Diego taunts Luther.
"So what? Is he just an animal to you too now, Diego, huh?" Luther points to Pogo, as Diego shakes his head, and mutters, 'don't'.
"Enough!" Pogo yells out, as they both turn towards him. "This house was attacked. We barely got out with our lives. And Grace... she wasn't so lucky. Your brother is missing, and this is how you rise to the occasion? Take your nonsense elsewhere. Now." Pogo says, as I stare at the ground sadly.
"Sorry Pogo." Diego says first,
"Yeah, sorry Pogo." Luther finishes, both of them leaving the room, their boots hitting the ground as they go down the hallway. If these assholes were going to be lollygagging around and doing fuck all but fighting, I've got to find Five. He's right. We've got to find Five, break all this news to him. The world was ending and me and him were the only ones who knew about it, I had to help somehow, if he told me how to do it and stopped being so stubborn.
Where to find him, was the question.
