I watch the road, as cars zoom past and in front of me, as I drive up to New York, the tall buildings and people, I wasn't used to this. But, Dad was, gone? I mean, he was old sure, but so soon? I mean, good riddance anyways. I was more nervous about seeing my family for the first time in 10 years, walking back into the house and reliving my terrible childhood. I sigh, turning up the radio as I hear the host start to talk.
"In news, Billionaire Inventor Sir Reginald Hargreeves has passed away in his home here in New York. How he passed is still a mystery. We will be updating as soon as we can on the nature of his passing. The tempature is 54 degrees here in the city-" I turn the radio back down as I keep driving in the streets, busy as all hell on this particular day, but I guess I wasn't used to traffic at all either.
I pull up to the Academy, the beige concrete it was made of stood brightly almost compared to the other brick walls beside it. I go behind to were dad's car was parked, and park my car there, grabbing my bags. I open up the gates, closing them behind me and walking up the steps, staring at the doors with sadness. What would I even say to everyone? 'Hey sorry I never got in contact with you until dad's funeral even though we used to be so close, sorry I shut you all out because of my craving to live a normal life.' It didn't seem fair. I enter the building, the dim yellow lights setting the atmosphere, the dark oak wood stairs, railings, and guardrails, the wooden walls with carvings embedded into them, the grooves and details standing out the more you look at it, the wooden flooring and carpet in the middle of the corridor, everything screamed billionare. Hell, this made my apartment look like actual shit. I walk around, letting the memories soak through me like a sponge, remembering everything I shut out, taking everything in as I see the main room, reminding me of all the times dad would call us in for meetings about missions. I walk past, seeing the dining room, remembering a time Diego threw a knife down by my feet to scare me, making dad angry of course. I go down the hallway and up the stairs to where our bedrooms were, seeing Allison's bedroom first, making me remember all the good times we had in there, as teens.
"So, if you were to date anyone in here, who would it be?" Allison asks me, sitting in her room on her bed.
"Ew! No one! They are like, family Allison."
"No I mean, not really, right? Just like adopted family, which means we don't have the same parents so we aren't blood related or whatever. It's fine, right?"
"Yeah I guess.."
"So than who?!"
"Allison! You go first."
"Okay, Luther. He always understood me more than you, no hard feelings. He always got me, and we have a connection, I know we do." She twirls her curly hair in her fingers.
"mhmmm, You too have always had chemistry. And you answered that like super fast."
"Shut up! Now you."
"Well, I'd have to say..."
"Allison! Aleya! What in gods name are you doing up so late? You know chatting time is during the day only! If your father catches you in here together this late you'll be in big trouble! You hear me?" Pogo stomps in.
"Sorry Pogo." Allison says quietly.
"Yeah, sorry Pogo." I agree.
"Get to your own beds immidiately. I won't tell your father this one time."
I smile, remembering that first time Pogo caught us talking late at night, but it wouldn't be the last, and he wouldn't ever tell Dad. I walk past Diego's old room, peering inside to remember something else, when Diego taught me knife throwing, one of his specialties.
"Okay, focus Aleya, see that red dot on the wall?" Diego says, pointing to the sharpie markered dot on the wall.
"Mhm."
"Okay, now I want you to take this knife, and throw it at it, keep all your focus on the wall." He hands me a knife, one of his throwing ones.
"Okay, can you guide me? Like, do I just throw it like a ball?" I say, pretending to throw it, doing poorly.
"Uh, yeah, like.. this." He grasps my arm, standing behind me as he guides me, with a hand on my hip.
"Damn okay! You're going to give me a bruise from gripping that hard. I think I got it." I throw the knife as hard as I can, aiming to the spot on the wall.
"Woo! Look! Aleya! You did it!"
"Bullseye, I knew I could, you just didn't believe in me." I cross my arms.
"Bullshit more like."
"Eat shit Diego!"
I give a slight chuckle, remembering all those times he'd get in shit for having holes in his walls for target practice. I stare at the hole I made, smiling.
"You having an appifany or something?" I hear a voice ring out, a deep familiar one. I turn around, seeing a familiar face too.
"Diego!" I say, reaching my arms out for a hug. I feel his strong arms wrap around me, burying my face into his neck, his scent of burning wood overtaking me, as I sigh. "It's been too long."
"Yeah, I know, Aleya. What have you been up to?" He says, letting me go and patting my back.
"Oh, me? I've been just hanging out, you know. Not doing cool things like you probably have. Just trying to finally live normally." I say, staring around me once again silently."I guess it's going to be unordinary again." I sigh out. He looks at me with a sadened expression, looking at the ground. "But how have you been Diego?"
"I guess I've been okay, just taking my time and fighting crime like dad always wanted us to." He says, as we keep walking.
"Yeah, I guessed by the fancy get up you got on your body with all the knifes. Sounds like you live a pretty exciting life like all our other siblings." I say, smiling. "As long as you guys are happy."
"Well not everyone wants to live as a ordinary person, Aleya." Diego says, and I snicker.
"You think I don't have awareness of that? There are people who would kill to be me and I know that." I say, stopping in my tracks when I see a very familiar room. I purse my lips, looking over to my right and seeing Five's bedroom, the door wide open like it was taunting me. I sigh, and feel Diego's arm around me.
"It seemed like the only person who cared when he.. dissapeared was me and Dad." I say sadly, and Diego snickers.
"Yeah because he was a dick. I know you two were super close but you failed to see he was a total ass." He says as he takes his arm off me.
"He was persistant and stubborn. Which is why we got along. You two would've gotten along, if you were smarter." I spit out at him, and he smiles.
"I love it when you're an asshole." He smiles and I hit his arm, continuing walking past Five's room. I drop my bags off into my room, and we walk back around to the main corridor, seeing Vanya and Allison hugging.
"What is she doing here?" Diego says, walking past them. I sigh.
"Diego not now-" I say, stopping beside Allison, before I get cut off.
"You don't belong here. Not after what you did." Diego says angrily.
"You're seriously going to do this today?" Allison says and I stand beside them, as Diego heads for the stairs. "Way to dress for the occasion, by the way."
"At least I'm wearing black." Diego spits back, and I roll my eyes. As much as I liked Diego as a brother, he could be a dick sometimes.
"I'm sorry about that introduction back. Weird way to see you guys again." I say, and they both turn to me, Allison giving me a hug first.
"Hey, sis. Good to see you again." She says, bending back up after giving me a hug.
"You too, Good to see you too Vanya." I say awkwardly as she nods, looking at the ground.
"You know what? Maybe he's right, and I shouldn't-" Vanya starts before Allison cuts him off.
"Forget about him." She says, smiling at her. "I'm glad you're here."
"Me too. I can't hold a grudge for too long, except for with Dad." I say, patting her on the back. She gives a half smile, and I start to walk away.
"Oh um, i'm going to go take a look around, I'll see you guys soon." I say with a smile. "it was nice seeing you guys again."
"See you later sis." Allison says, Vanya giving me a wave. I walk into the living room, the smell and sound of the fireplace crackling filling my senses. I stare at the wall of books, all the spines of the books sticking out with different colors, the weird animal heads stuck on the walls, the bar me and Klaus would sneak into. I smile, staring at the couches that were barely used, when I hear a familiar voice.
"Welcome home, Ms. Aleya."
