Kuvira, Asami, and Korra were heading to a hotel far out of Republic City and into Ba Sing Se. Opal and Bolin were staying with Su, and Wu and Mako were going to meet Wu's family.
Asami sat in the passenger seat while Kuvira drove, and Korra was in the back seat asleep.
"She's just trying to protect you," Kuvira said.
"I know....I just wish she would tell me what from. Something is eating at her, but I can't help her if she doesn't let me in," Asami put her head against the window and watched the night sky.
"I know what it is, but I can't tell you."
Asami seemed to suddenly come alive. She sat upright quickly at those words and let her eyes go from Kuvira to the backseat.
"It's not that, if that's what your implying. She's kind of like a little sister to me. I only know because I came from the same place," Kuvira started to drum her fingers on the steering wheel.
"Can you tell me?" Asami asked, relaxed a bit but not ignoring what Kuvira said.
"I would if I had to suffer consequences, only they won't kill me. If I say anything, they'll kill her. And we both care about her way too much," Kuvira said, looking back at Korra for a second in the mirror.
They both sat in silence for a few moments.
"Am I the only one who she death grips in her sleep?" Kuvira asked.
"No. I was terrified when we first had a sleepover when we were thirteen...I woke up in the middle of the night and was terrified when I felt a man grip around my waist. Turns out it was just her, which I don't understand because she was so little," Asami laughed, remembering when she had invited Korra over and how much fun they had.
"So we had to share a room where we were, and almost every night I would wake up and she would be suffocating me," Kuvira smiled and shook her head.
They both laughed and shared memories they had with Korra, Asami sharing ones that Kuvira insisted were better since they were about 'baby' Korra.
"She's come such a long way," Asami looked down and smiled. "I'm so proud of her."
"She was so scared and small when I first met her...she's changed so much, but she's still scared, just not of the same things," Kuvira looked straight ahead.
Asami gave her a look that said 'please elaborate.'
"On the inside she's the same scared little girl that I had to protect. But now she's scared of herself. She's trying so hard to keep it together for you but I can tell she's so close to breaking," Once again Kuvira adjusted the mirror so that she could see Korra, making sure she was still okay. Asami was just leaning back to check on her.
"I know she can't tell me anything, but I need her to let me help. Every time I try to help her she pushes me away. She doesn't understand that nothing she does will stop me from loving her," Asami reached an arm back and brushed away a loose hair that fell out of Korra's bun.
"Korra's a...complicated person, to say the least. It's not a bad thing, but it's not necessarily a good thing either. She built walls around herself to protect her, and she's doing her best."
That made sense. Korra had been hurt by tons of people before, Asami knew, so why shouldn't her first instinct be to protect herself?
She also knew that her and Kuvira were the only ones who had ever gotten this close to Korra, so Asami would have to be patient.

"I hate you," Korra felt tears come to her eyes. "You aren't worth anything."
She slammed her fist down, ignoring the waves of pain that shot through her arm. She clenched her teeth and closed her eyes.
She was so mad. How had someone been following her and she didn't notice? She almost got herself killed, which she didn't really care about.
If she died then Asami would die. She wouldn't be able to protect Asami from six feet underground, she barely succeeded in doing so last night when she was completely living.
She hadn't said anything to Kuvira yet, but she was genuinely thinking about telling Zaheer she couldn't go through with the assassination.
He would understand, right? Korra always had a special place in his eyes so maybe he would let her get away this one thing.
She didn't even have to stay with her, as long Asami was alive and safe she could die peacefully.
But if that didn't work she didn't have another plan.
The mission was supposed to be simple. She comes here, kills Asami, goes back and gets her memory erased.
But she couldn't help falling in love. She rushed right into the mission without an actual plan. This was her fault.
"This is all your fault," Korra looked back up at the mirror and locked eyes with herself. Her hands were shaking out of anger.
Asami knocked on the locked bathroom door and told her the food they ordered was here, so Korra quickly wiped her eyes and washed her face off.
"I hate you so fucking much," Korra told her reflection before turning around and exiting the small hotel bathroom.
