Kuvira and Opal were in the library, alone. Kuvira stood pacing around the room while Opal sat in one of the lounge chairs. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
"I had to leave, Opal," Kuvira finally spoke but still continued to pace back and forth.
"Why? It's been nine years," Opal looked down and started tapping her foot, something she did to distract herself.
"I know, and I'm sorry. But you need to understand-"
"Understand what?! Do you know how much that hurt me? I was ten years old trying to figure out when my big sister would come back!" Opal snapped.
Kuvira stayed quiet for a moment before taking something off of her neck. "I don't deserve this....I broke our promise."
She laid a golden chain with a small locket on the end into Opal's hand.
"You...you kept it..." Opal opened up the tiny circle shaped locket and felt tears sting her eyes when she saw the picture inside.
Opal was only nine in the small picture, and she was being held by a sixteen year old Kuvira.
Opal gave her the locket when Kuvira turned seventeen and Opal turned ten. They shared a birthday, and surprisingly Kuvira had gotten her the same exact chain and locket but silver.
Nine years ago
"Opal, whenever you need me, I'll be right here. Family always looks out for each other. Especially you and me, we're best friends. I'll always come back for you," Kuvira smiled, putting the silver locket into Opal's small hands.
Kuvira took off of work so that she could be here for Opal, she had gotten a job so that their mom wouldn't have to overwork herself. Su had fallen into a depression since Baatar Senior died, so Kuvira decided to take on a motherly role for the boys and Opal.
"Do you promise?" Opal asked.
"I promise. Now go brush your teeth and get ready for bed, tonight you can stay up late with me to watch the new episode of Avatar," Kuvira told her, and Opal's eyes brightened.
"Really?" Opal exclaimed.
"Really, just don't tell mom," Kuvira pushed her towards the bathroom.
Present
Opal stood up and uncovered the locket that was hidden under her shirt, giving Kuvira's locket back to her.
"I missed you so much...I thought you died," Opal wrapped her arms around Kuvira, who was surprised for a second.
"Never...I told you I'll always come back for you," Kuvira returned the embrace.
Kuvira wasn't going to come back to Republic City. Zaheer told her that she had an option to watch Korra or not. She wasn't going to go anywhere until she found out that Opal was staying in Korra's area.
After all, she did make a promise.
