I never felt so relieved to be back home. Homeland security almost stopped our car. I tried to play it cool and pretend everything was ok but the other girls were a bit fidgety. Annie put on her shades and was twitching a bit - that alone screams suspicion. I was fine until they started searching the car. My chest pounded when they searched the back seats where the package was at. I finally released my breath when security gave us the clearance to leave.
"Thank, God. I almost shit myself," I admitted.
Beth drove for almost an hour before parking alongside the road. We all got out and went to the back to grab the box.
"The dog would have smelled drugs, right?" Beth asked.
Ruby nodded. "Yeah."
"Unless they wrapped the drugs airtight and dipped it in wax," I piped up. The girls gave me a confused look as to how I would know that. "Don't give me that look and just open the box." Beth opened the box. My brows furrowed when there's nothing but a bunch of wrapping paper inside. "They're joking, right?"
"Get in there," Annie said as she pushed Beth aside and started rummaging through the box. Wrapping paper. Wrapping paper. Oh, look? More wrapping paper. "Is there something inside?"
"Nope," I responded as I looked through the other side of the paper Annie's looking in. "Just us looking at this thing like some kind of telescope."
"I don't see anything," Ruby said as she handed me another wrapping paper.
I started shaking it. "Maybe they taped it on the inside?" Nothing was coming out. "Hey, at least we can use these as toy swords."
"Like this?" Annie said before smacking my arm with it.
"Ow, hey! I'm trying to find the bright side of things. Instead of getting pissed that we risked going to jail for a bunch of stupid paper."
"It's wrapping paper," Beth said in annoyance as she unraveled one of them. "It's just wrapping paper."
My mouth dropped. On the other side of the paper was a bunch of hundred dollar bills lined up nicely. There's got to be thousands of dollars in one load and this box is full of it!
"What?" Beth asked once she saw our shocked faces.

"It would be in an abandoned warehouse," I muttered once I gave Beth the address where the guy wanted us to drop off the box. "It's always in an abandoned warehouse."
Beth stopped the car in front of the building.
"Are we supposed to knock or something?" she asked.
I gave her a look. "Haven't you watched and crime shows or mafia themed movies? You don't knock or honk your horn. You give them a signal."
"What signal?" Ruby sassed. "Did he give you one?"
"Uhhh...."
"He didn't give you a signal, did he?" Annie asked.
I unbuckled my seatbelt and got up. "Let me try something."
I rolled down my window and leaned out. I pinched my thumb and pointer finger together before bringing it close to my mouth and whistled.
"How is that better than a knock?" Beth asked.
I smirked once the garage door started to open. "Well, no one's outside so we can't flash your headlights." I slid back in the car. "And most movies...they whistle."
Beth started the car again and went inside the warehouse. My mouth dropped open the moment we were in. This is exactly like I've seen in every drug smuggling shows I've seen. There were people washing cash, drying it, seeing if it passes the blue light test. A few were cutting up the bills from the wrapping paper.
"Holy mother," Annie breathed once we stepped outside the car.
My eyes scanned the building until they landed on the gang leader. His back was toward me. He was talking to one of his associates and I hate how my chest started to pound fast. Especially when my mind began thinking how good he looked.
"Perrie, come with me," Beth said. I wasn't even paying attention when she said that but was brought back into reality when she grabbed my wrist and dragged me with her.
"Wait, me? Why?"
"I'm gonna need you as my backup."
My chest started beating more vigorously the closer we got to him. He kept arguing with his assossiate, possibly about a deadline.
"Excuse me," Beth spoke softly. The man didn't hear her and kept talking. "Hi." Beth, sweetie, use your grownup voice. "Excuse me." Nothing. "I just need to know we're good." Ignored. Again.
"Yo!" I shouted. That finally got their attention. The man turned and looked at us. I have to keep a brave face on and know that we're not in his debt. "We got your stuff. So, are we good? Can me and my friends go back to the way we were?" The man stood up straight and crossed his arms. "No one's going to break into our house? We don't owe you anything. I want to hear you say we're good."
The man was quiet and that scared me. I pushed Beth behind me, expecting the worst. If he pulls a gun and decided to shoot me, the least I can do is push Beth so she can run to Annie and Ruby to get the hell out of here. The leader scanned my figure and his eyes landed on something. On what? I don't know. I'm busy trying not to get scared at the thought of a gun to my face again.
"We're good."
