--CHAPTER THIRTEEN--

Out of the blackness came a dark figure, nearly as dark as the shadows themselves. A shock of white stood out, obviously a mans face. The rest of him was all different values of black and gray.

It was Ash. Sage stiffened, fearing the inevitable anger he was bound to present when he spoke to her. After all, she had snuck out. She’d hoped to find something out and then safely return before he’d noticed her absence. Damn her ability to get distracted so easily.

His eyes were slit as he regarded her with a cool stare. His lips pursed into a hard line, turning to an almost white pallor. She couldn’t tell how angry he was; just that he appeared extremely irritated.

Sage returned the look of hostility, staring Ash straight in the eye. She very faintly recalled being able to make even an adult feel nervous by giving them this stare. It didn’t seem to faze him.

Ash cleared his throat. He said, “What are you doing out here?”

Sage tilted her chin up; trying to give the appearance she was braver than she actually was. “Didn’t you see me? I’m sure you’ve been there longer than I thought.”

Ash walked slowly across the dusty dance floor, until he was only a few inches from Sage. “You know, most people don’t talk back to me with such disrespect,” he stated without much feeling, just simply as if it were a mater of fact.

Sage looked at him evenly. “And I’d wager you usually do something when they actually do.”

He nodded thoughtfully. “You’d win that bet.”

Sage straightened her shoulders and huffed her chest out; similar to how a cat does when it’s in the face of a savage dog. “So why don’t you do something?” she inquired, refusing to back down.

An emotion flashed across his face, too fast for Sage to catch. “Because,” he said slowly. His voice seemed strained. “Because there’s something about you. You make me crazy. You make me regret every bad thing I’ve ever done. You make me want to be the man I used to be… before this curse….” He spoke to himself, as though he had forgotten Sage completely.

The, as if jumping out of a dream, his eyes focused on Sage again. “Forget I said any of that,” he told her quickly.

Sage let out a humorless laugh. “You know I won’t.”

He regarded her with a curious expression. “I can make you forget…. But yet, I choose not to. What is it about you?” he asked, his soft and gentle voice echoing off of the tall walls surrounding them.

A smirk grew on Sage’s face. “I’m gorgeous. Why wouldn’t you fall in love with me?” she asked in a joking tone, trying to lighten his seriousness.

This only seemed to make it worse. “Love?” he mused. “No… it can’t be… that’s not possible.”

Sage shrugged. “I was only kidding, you know.”

He glanced down at her, looking into her gleaming eyes. Sage looked back at him, trying to guess at his intentions. Judging by the odd vulnerability written across his face, she decided to be bold.

Very carefully she moved forward, placing her small hands firmly on his shoulder. She reached up on her toes and then brushed her lips across his mouth.

He stiffened under her touch, going ridged all over. She pulled away, thinking perhaps she shouldn’t have done that. She could still channel her old self though, and that seemed like a very Sage-like thing to have done.

He stared at her as she came back down on her feet; half in amazed shock and have in horror. She raised an eyebrow at him, challenging him.

He stared down at her delicate mouth. After a few beats his arms wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her against him. He couldn’t help himself. He’d never wanted someone so much. It was like torture having her so close and not doing anything with the opportunity.

He lifted her up off the ground, making it easier to reach her mouth. She let out a startled gasp, but expertly wrapped her legs around his waist and her arms around his neck, as though she had done this a million times before, probably with a million different guys.

But of course Ash didn’t care. She was his right now. She was offering herself to him by being the one to kiss him first. The logical part of his brain argued that he shouldn’t do this; he should feel guilty for killing everyone she loved. But that part of his brain lost to pleasure and he crushed his mouth eagerly to hers.

Sage was completely taken aback by this. Of all the ways she had imagined things would go with Ash when she saw him again, especially after he’d found her wondering blindly around his home, she had never thought it would be romantic. She’d never though she’d kiss him again, after the way he’d run out.

But it was obvious he had his own reasons for doing what he’d done just a few hours ago. It didn’t matter to her know. Something felt so mysterious and safe as their lips clashed together. He felt solid and accountable as he planted passionate kisses along her neck and jaw line.

She let out a sound that seemed to be a sigh from pure ecstasy mixed with a groan of satisfaction.

“Perhaps we should go back to the bedroom?” he suggested, his voice the most uneven she had ever heard it before.

Not trusting herself to speak, she just nodded her head. Ash allowed her back down onto her feet and she covertly lifted a hand to wipe away the saliva that had accumulated around her mouth. He took her other hand and led her back the way they’d come.

How could she be doing this? A small part of her brain wondered idly. The logical part of her mind was screaming at her that going alone to a bedroom with Ash was not a good idea. But she couldn’t help herself. She continued after him.

Just as they were reaching the stairs that connected the ballroom to the basement she could’ve sworn she heard a noise from the shadows on the other side of the room. She glanced up and saw a flash of gold, like the sun shining through on a rainy day. But before she could get a better look and find out what it had been, Ash pulled her back down the stairs, leaving the old ballroom behind them.
