--CHAPTER SIX--
Ellie? Sage asked herself. Who was that? The handwriting appeared to be male, but the name it was signed by would beg to differ that the author was a boy. So was Ellie her best friend? Her worst enemies? What had Sage seen?
The letter wasn’t dated, so it could have been from three years ago or three days ago. Somehow Sage thought it was more recent. She had a sickening feeling that this played a part in how she had ended up here.
She sighed and shoved the lined paper back into the diary. It was so frustrating not knowing anything. She’s seen movies about tragic things like this. Someone lost their memory and had to deal with the conflict of regaining it. But none had ever started off with a mysterious stranger holding them captive.
A loud booming sound suddenly rang through the air. The bed she sat upon shook below her. She quickly reached for the trench coat she had gotten from Ash and shoved the journal in the inside pocket. Just as she did this her door banged open.
“We have to go,” Ash stated flatly.
“What’s going on?”
He shook his head. “It’s nothing. Or, at least it wont be anything if you get moving. We can’t stay here.”
Sage gave him an incredulous look. “Where are we going to go?”
He ignored her question and looked at her. He studied her fully dressed body and smoothly pinned up hair. “I thought you were going to sleep.” He pursed his lips.
She stuck her chin out stubbornly. “I couldn’t fall asleep,” she told him simply. It didn’t appear that he believed her. Sage didn’t care.
Ash swiftly walked over to her and grabbed her by the wrist. “I don’t have time for this. We have to leave. Now.”
Sage’s fingers grasped the coat just as he roughly pulled her to the door. She had almost had to leave it behind. Then her only clue to her past would be forever lost.
Another thunderous boom sounded. She cringed. Were they being attacked?
“This way!” called a clear, confident voice. It sounded like it was coming from the flight of stairs to their left. Ash tugged her to the right.
“Is there even an exit this way?” she demanded.
“Shhh!”
“Definitely this way!” the man on the stairs called. Footsteps sounded. They were growing closer.
Ash stopped directly in front of a large wall made out of cinder blocks. His eyes snapped shut.
“What the hell are you doing?” Sage shrieked, forgetting to keep her voice down.
“Come on! I can hear voices!” the guy yelled again, this time from the hallway.
“Ash!”
His eyes flicked open just enough to glare at her. She fell silent.
Moments after a door appeared right before her eyes. “H-how did you do that?” she stuttered. Ash simply shrugged and pulled her through the entryway.
She turned her back as they entered a corridor and saw the man who had been yelling. He couldn’t haven been much older than Sage herself. He had tanned skin that strained against the muscles of his arms. His hair was a bleach blonde. Sweat trickled down his face and his eyes widened as he noticed her unwavering stare.
“There’s someone with him!” he called just as another man stopped beside him. This one was taller than him. They could have been brothers except for the difference in their skin tones. The newcomer was blessed with the blonde hair but his skin was nearly as pasty as Sage’s, making him look washed out.
He was about to speak but the opening to the cave shut abruptly and he was cut off, preventing Sage from listening in to them. She had hoped that they would reveal who they were and what they wanted with Ash.
“Move faster!” Ash hissed, tightening his grip on her. She did as asked as they ran around the winding turns.
