--CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO--
When Sage came to, she had a pounding headache. The first thing she realized was that she was lying in a pitch-black room on a lumpy bed. The second thing she realized was that her throat was on fire.
She jumped out of the bed and onto her feet in literally 0.002 seconds. She was surprised by her speed. Before she could contemplate her newfound swiftness for very long, she realized she was incredibly dizzy by her fast movement. Her head and throat pounded painfully in synchronization.
After a few moments the dizzy blur went away, and she realized she could see in the dark. She could make out a door, and a doorway that led to a bathroom. After a few seconds of looking around, she realized she was in Elijah’s room. She also realized there was a figure in the corner, sitting in an armchair.
Dark hair fell in the man’s eyes, and he wore a crisp, clean suit. Sage felt a ping of sadness as she realized this scene was much the same as their very first encounter. Everything had been so much simpler back then. It almost made her want to cry right then.
“A-Ash?” she tried to croak through her raw throat.
“Darling….” Ash replied, sounding mournful and regretful. He didn’t move his head so Sage couldn’t read his expression through his shield of hair.
Sage was about to ask what had happened, and what was going on, but before she could do that she noticed a flash of metal in Ash’s hand. A knife.
“What are you doing….?” She inquired in her hoarse tone.
And at that moment, Ash brought the blade up to the side of his neck and slashed a cut in it. A small line of blood appeared instantly on his neck and slowly dripped down to his collar.
A feeling stirred inside of Sage that she didn’t know she was even capable of feeling. It was like she had been starved for weeks and the scent of his blood was like the scent of a large buffet. She was over to him immediately.
She rested her hands on his shoulders, and finally he looked up to meet her gaze. His eyes were the saddest she had ever seen. Sadder than when he had thought she would never love him again. She didn’t take much time to dwell on that though.
She brought her lips to his throat. She couldn’t wait. She needed his blood. Right now. She felt her canine teeth extend and pierce his smooth skin. He gasped and then made a moaning sound, as though he enjoyed it. She couldn’t understand how he could enjoy such a thing.
Several seconds past that seemed like a century to her, and Ash simply kept his head thrown back, not even trying to stop her.
At some point, some of her rational old self came back. She needed to stop. She couldn’t drain Ash of his blood. That would kill him, immortal or not. He still needed his blood to live.
With some effort, she pried herself off of him. He looked up at her, his eyes slightly dazed. Then his eyebrows drew together in confusion.
“How’d you stop?” he asked of her.
