--CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN--

She was lying in the bed, Elijah with one hand sprawled across her shoulders. He was sleeping fitfully, his breathing coming evenly. She on the other hand, was staring up at the ceiling.

She was trying to figure out why she had done that. Sure, it had distracted her for an hour or two, but afterwards, the guilt that followed was immeasurable. She was stupid. She hardly knew Elijah. But something about him just seemed so sure and familiar. But that’s not who she wanted to give it up to.

If she was being honest with herself, it was Ash she really wanted to do those things with. And how ridiculous was that? He didn’t love her. Elijah appeared to love her more than Ash ever did. But still, the nagging thought of Ash kept creeping into her mind.

His voice, so worried when the Hunter’s had first attacked. At the time it was almost like he was only worried about her well-being. Was it possible that he actually was?

But then why had he killed everyone in her town? Her brother? Nothing seemed to make sense to her.

And then there was Elijah. She felt like maybe, if she could ever get over Ash, just maybe one day she could actually move on with him. But part of her didn’t even want to try.

How could she be thinking this way? Was she crazy? That seemed like a pretty probable idea. What person fell in love with a mass murderer who had killed all her loved ones?

So was that it then? Was she in love with Ash? No matter what he did, would she still be in love with him? Because when you love someone, you always hope they’ll be the best they can be. You keep telling yourself that they’ll get better; they’ll try harder to be good. It doesn’t matter what they do, you still hope for them. And that’s what she felt like about Ash.

She kept telling herself she just needed answers, she needed to know why everything had happened. But that wasn’t the only reason she needed to see him again. She wanted him to hold her, tell her everything would be all right.

She was thinking about all this, thinking about loving Ash, thinking about what a mistake it was to do what she did with Elijah, when a strong, yet faint tap sounded on the bedroom window. Somebody was out there, trying to get her attention.
