--Chapter Thirty-six--

They had traveled miles and miles over night. She didn't know what city or state they were in, or even if they had crossed over to a new country. With her new vampire abilities, she was barely even winded after running all night.

Ellie insisted that she travel with Sage. She didn't trust her to go by herself, assuming she would plot something with Ash and not keep her end of the bargain.

Sage was freaking out, but tried her hardest to keep it from showing. She had a limited amount of days to find this woman or she would start to slowly rot from the inside out. And in the mean time of going on this wild goose chase, she had to think of a way to cross Ellie and save Ash, while still getting her blood to save herself.

"Do you even have any idea where this witch is?" Sage asked, the first either of them had talked in hours.

Ellie shrugged. "I think near the Philippines. Maybe Paris? Peru? I don't really know. It's like she has a Facebook page."

Sage let out an exasperated sigh. "How do you think we'll ever find her?"

"Well, now that's a lot of doubt you've got there, sunshine." Sage just glared.

Ellie inspected her nails, and then glanced at the sky. "The suns coming up. We had best be getting our nocturnal asses somewhere for the day."

It took about fifteen minutes to find a slummy motel. It appeared that over night they had made it to New Mexico. The attendant in the lobby gave them dirty looks and smirked at their breasts. He had overly tan skin and a black unibrow overtop of beady eyes. Sage shot him a disgusted look. It just made his smile widen.

"One room, bitch," Ellie said, snapping her fingers to get his attention off her chest.

He chuckled. "Two beautiful ladies, needin' a room at this hour? Got some coke in your pockets or cops on your heels?" he asked, his smirk never faltering.

"None of your business, ass. Just give us the room."

He held up his hands, showing he had no weapons. "Whateva, lady." He handed Ellie a key.

On the top floor they found they're room. The numbers were peeling off their door, and inside the puke green carpet looked worn and was missing in spots. Under the top comforter of the bed closest to the window there were stains on the white sheets that looked suspiciously like dried blood.

"We're supposed to stay here?" Sage asked, incredulous.

Ellie squinted her eyes at Sage. "Would you rather burn to death?"

"I just figured if you're making me go on this long, stupid endeavor we could at least afford a place that didn't look like someone was murdered in," Sage snapped.

"Look here, princess, this is to save your life. Sorry a place I'm paying for doesn't reach up to your standards. I could've made you burrow into the ground under a goddamn tree or left you to combust if I felt like it," Ellie exploded.

Sage laughed without humor. "Remember, you gain something out of this too. Why is it you want Ash dead so bad that you'd save me to do it?"

Ellie held Sage's gaze. "Go to bed. Now. If you want my blood, don't ask questions. You're my puppet. Act like it."

Sage stormed into the bathroom and slammed the door. If she thought the bedroom was bad, the bathroom put it to shame. The mirror directly in front of her was missing pieces of it's glass, the sink was stained a disgusting orange color, the shower was growing mold in the corners and was missing a shower head. Hair was plastered all over the shower walls. She held back a gag.

Sucking it up, she turned the shower on, the water steaming hot. She got in to clear her head. She had to come up with a plan, but how could she? She had no way of contacting Ash, and even if she did Ellie would never let her out of her sight long enough to make a call or send a letter. She never should have agreed. She was entirely winging it, and so far it was not going well.

Her eyes began to start drooping out of exhaustion and her body could feel that the sun was blazing high in the sky, even though she was tucked away in a filthily whole in the wall.

When she exited the bathroom, Ellie was already asleep. If only Sage could make a run for it, and get away. Ellie seemed to be sleeping like the dead. But she needed her blood. Already she could feel herself weakening, needing her sire to save her from the hell she would soon have to endure. As much as she hated to admit it, she was frightened, straight to her core. She didn't want to die. And now that she didn't have the support of Ash, she felt so alone.

Resisting the temptation to slit Ellie's throat and run, she got into her bed. She knew Ellie was stronger, older, and wiser. Sage could not beat her if she woke up. She tried to stay alert, but her instincts won the best of her, forcing her eyes shut and her brain to blank.
