--CHAPTER THREE--
He exited the room and cursed himself. It was ridiculous to have even saved the girl. But her confidence had caught his attention. She acted as though she were not capable of dying. Perhaps it was just her utter ignorance, or maybe she was just unaware of how deathly the place she lived really was.
He had loved how she looked when she realized that he was the one responsible for the death of her family and the destruction of her town. She had a mixture of determination, fury and anguish. Of course that look had now left her eyes, due to her amnesia, and was replaced by confusion and worry.
He wasn’t sure why she had forgotten, for she had not hit her head. But he believed he had read somewhere that human’s sometimes blocked out painful memories. Perhaps that was what his dear little dove was doing. She may appear fierce, but deep down she was just as fragile and breakable as the next human.
He was well aware of the fact that bringing her here, to his home, was quite idiotic. He had once brought someone here and that had ended in the worst possible manner. Even knowing he was stupid for doing so, he couldn’t resist having fun with the little Sage.
The fact that she wanted to know the truth and refused to give the truth herself unless he did made her even more desirable. That made him chuckle. He commended himself for being quick on his feet and thinking of the name Ash. It suited him. After all, he was the one responsible for burning many towns to ashes.
He loved how she had marveled at his powers. She had been utterly astonished by his ability to change the basement into a luxury bedroom suite. He hadn’t really changed the room, only transferred an image of what she wanted to see into her mind.
He could make people see and feel horrible things, just as he could make them see happy images. If the person he was making see the things accepted them and didn’t try to block him, he could make anything real to them. Only once had a person been able to block him…
He shoved the thought aside and continued down the winding corridor of his home. Sage couldn’t get out of her room so he wouldn’t have to worry about her following him. He wouldn’t want the little girl to be able to uncover his secrets this fast. He would want to prolong it and make it as tragic as possible.
A wicked grin spread across his face as he remembered her, so weak and vulnerable in her unconscious state. He relished at the delicate, unblemished skin he saw while he changed her into something more suitable for a dove. The white, flowing fabric did her pale features justice and made her look like a goddess. He couldn’t wait to ruin her will to live.
He reached the end of the hallway and opened a creaking door. This led into his personal office.
Inside sat a small wooden desk and walls full of books. He sat down in the black swivel chair and set out to his work.
He had been tracking a certain William Johnson for many years now. He was a historian who specialized in the downfall of many old towns. Quite a few of those towns’ ends had been due to Slender Man. This Mr. Johnson was beginning to become suspicious of the burning of towns and mysterious disappearances of all the residence.
He found it fun to see this man’s new discoveries. He was heading in the right direction of thinking it had to do with paranormal beings, but he hadn’t even scratched the surface with what it might be.
He tossed the paper into the wastebasket beside his mahogany desk and laughed a menacing little laugh at the ignorance of the human race. This man was getting nowhere, just like all the other humans.
He stood and slid his hands over his suit to smooth out the wrinkles. He put on a façade of a polite young man and left to go play with his new toy now that she was awoken and showered.
